Oh geez, I think I just peed myself, that is way to funny. I love it. L & D will too.

My birth plans consisted of literally this: epidural, yes (unfortunately only got it on my oldest), husband in room only, avoid pitocin at all costs (got it both times), bank the cord blood, apologies for my ugly mouth ahead of time, and thank you for helping bring the littles into the world. :)

Good luck!

Being a guy, and finding myself looking at accidents and train wrecks, I had to look. :icon_redface:

Also, never having been a participant in a child birth, "Pooping on the table" brought on a whole new dimension in my vocabulary. :shocker:

Pitocin. Had to look it up.

Now, I am OFFICIALLY weirded out as a guy. :icon_stupid:

Otherwise known as:

Oxytocin is best known for roles in female reproduction: 1) it is released in large amounts after distension of the cervix and uterus during labor, and 2) after stimulation of the nipples, facilitating birth and breastfeeding. Recent studies have begun to investigate oxytocin's role in various behaviors, including orgasm, social recognition, pair bonding, anxiety, and maternal behaviors.[2] For this reason, it is sometimes referred to as the "love hormone".

It is a damn good thing that the only object that I may have to pass thru my reproductive "organ" is a kidney stone. If you have to stimulate my nipples or my behavior during orgasm, can I just have a beer instead ?

Casey - Pitocin is the synthetic form of Oxytocin, and it sucks when they give it to you during labor. It sucks big time. They gave it to me after my miscarriage last spring, and it HURTS. The thing is, when your body releases Oxytocin naturally to induce labor, it ALSO releases endorphins, which help to mask the pain of contractions. Pitocin? Not so much. Your body has nothing to do with it, so no lovely natural pain killers arrive. Just the contractions and the pain. That's why induced births are often much harder/faster/more painful - and usually wind up with the laboring mom requiring intervention in the form of an epidural.

But yes - since you mention it - nipple stimulation is one of the things they suggest you try to start labor naturally when you are at or past your due date, or to increase labor.

Trust me, sometimes I wish I was a guy too. L&D scares the daylights out of me. I'm pretty sure I can hack it, but I am 100% certain it's not going to be much fun!

They will actually appreciate your birthing plan! I can't tell you how appreciative my 2 nurses were about me telling them "Men make plans and the gods laugh!". I think they were really not expecting it with me because I had a Midwife and no OB/GYN. You can really tell that most L&D Nurses are sick to death of militant mommies!

You should ask about Membrane Sweeping. I had one done and it worked like a charm! My water broke within 36 hours of it!

Please give them this birthing plan! They will seriously love you for it! You are managing to let them know what you'd like, without telling them how to do their job.

And yes, pitocin does suck. If they give you a dose, get an epidural shooter. Also remember you can go from 2 cm to 10 lickety split and then there's no time for any pain relief. I think I may have invented new curse words, but I'm a total sissy when it comes to pain, so it may not have been as bad as I imagined.

Do ask them for a mirror, even for a little bit-watching what's going on down there is seriously the coolest thing you will ever see.

Posted on the Blog, and repeated here for those whom are too chicken to read it.

While as a Guy whom has never and will never, have this issue, I think you nailed it. I've participated in this as the "Catcher" and the "Chord Snippin Guy." If the nurses aern't rolling as in ROTFLOL, let me know and I'll shoot them with some laughing gas. Sounds like you have a plan, a humorous one, but a plan nevertheless. As always the best wishes from Uncle Ted and Aunt Judy, and "Gma" Marie. The guys Ethel, Oreo, Luci, and Mr. Smooch (Ricky) all send Big Sloobery Sommchies to you and Sandy, and of course "Bob."

My oldest I was given Pitocin for no reason whatsoever I figured out - but at least I had an epidural - I believe I kissed my tiny little asian anesthesiologist! 8 hr L & D for him

My middle one I was put on Pitocin because the Dr was in a hurry and he dang well knew I couldn't get an epidural because I was on blood thinners the whole pregnancy. They gave me Nubane instead (which did nothing) and it put the baby in the NICU because it repressed his breathing. Talk about a mama on the warpath. 15 hr L & D for him.

Pitocin is ugly. Sometimes it's needed. Just don't let them pressure you (or worse Sandy) into it without good reason.

I don't believe in giving war stories of birth to scare anyone - truly it was a wonderful experience and I'm so glad I did it, and though I tease why we adopted #3, it was really because of medical issues. :)

Oh Nessa, give your plan as it is to L&D:) They will really appreciate not have a dictatorial mamma. Having been through this a time or three, you'll do fine:)

Nessa...DO NOT change one word. No editing, no bulleted lists. Then we'll all place bets on how quickly this is posted on the L&D nurses bulletin board.

I love this plan. They will love you!! I was cracking up reading it!

I did the whole induced thing with no epidural. It was pretty fast both times, first was 5 hours, second 3.5 hours. The first time you hold your baby, everything you've gone through is soooo worth it.

OK .... Can I get a vote for Sandy getting an epidural ? One for the team. The guy in this situation deserves drugs too...doesn't he ? :groovy:

Medical mary jane is only a quick buzz. Give Sandy the full Monty.

In all seriousness ..... Nessa, I hope and pray that this transforms itself into the most, and incredible moment of your life. (Besides you conceiving ..... that was probably cool too ........:neener: )

Sandy and I can play on the same ball field. I'm almost certain that foul language and gestures will eminate from you that would make the best sailor blush. BE NICE to the man that fostered your loins ..... (so to speak ....) :allg069:

Nessa,
That was so much fun to read. Brought back a lot of memories. Thanks for sharing that. I agree with everyone else, don't change a thing. Give it to them as is and I'm sure it will be in a frame, hanging on the wall of the OB unit for years to come!
Just remember, God gives all mothers the amazing ability to forget labor. Hence the show "19 kids and counting". If he didn't, there would be a lot more "only children" out there. Good luck and I know you will do fine. You seem to have the ability to see the humor in every situation. As for labor and delivery, you will laugh your butt off at some of the things that will happen.
