Worried about Brinks

I'm worried about Brinks and I'm hoping that someone is familiar with what I found. The other day while he was lying down next to me I noticed a small lump right next to his "private part". It's right in the middle along side of it. It's not his testicles since they have been checked and are where they should be and we could feel that they still are. The lump is about the size of a marble. We called our breeder after a couple of days of it not going away and they said that one of their dogs has the same thing for the last 3 years and not to worry.

My husband is under the feeling that we take Brinks to the vet and just have it removed to be on the safe side. (a lump being anywhere is making me nervous and thinking of the worst that it could be even though he is so young) Can it be something really bad? The thought makes me so upset. We plan on taking him to the Vet but at the same time I don't want him going through any unnecessary tests and trauma while he is still so young but I guess I don't have a choice. do I?? and if they do remove it what's the damage from having anesthesia so young???? Please tell me from all of your experiences if this is something that is common and what you would do and allow the vet to do.

Is it "fixed", or can you move it? How big? pea, marble etc. Is it skin colored, red, black? If it isn't fixed it could very well be a lipoma (fatty tumor, & nothing to worry about), but to be sure take him to the vet.

You should have the vet take a look. Hopefully he'll tell you it's just a cyst and you won't have anything to worry about. If anything the vet visit is worth it to relieve you of your fears.

Carmella - could it be the glands? Nanook often shows his glands very visibly under his skin alongside his sheath. The first time I felt them I freaked out and dragged him to the vet thinking they were tumors but they were just his glands. Once again, I provided at least 10 minutes of amusement for my vet. *sighs* Better to be safe than sorry so I'd bring him in, especially if there isn't a twin to the thing you found on the other side. But for your sake I hope you "found" the same thing I did!

I went through this with Moose. He is the first boy dog I've owned. Even though he is fixed, he had a lump next to / behind his private parts. I worriedly reported this to the vet who delicately told me she thought he might have been "excited" and it wasn't something to worry about.

How's Brinks? You had me checking over Bella to make sure there were no odd lumps or bumps. Kisses to sweet baby boy Brinks.

We will be making an appointment with the vet first think tomorrow morning and hopefully it all turns out to be nothing. Hopefully all they have to do is look at it and determine what it is without any bloodwork, tests, etc. I would hate to put Brinks through all that for nothing.

Don't know anything about "glands". But I could tell you that it's just on ONE side of his "you know what" and remains there whether he's sleeping or playing. (I did take a picture of it but my husband said I'd get arrested if I posted it on the internet...lol) So we'll see what they say and I'll let you know as soon as I find out. In the meantime please keep sending me your opinions. And most IMPORTANTLY what should I expect the vet to do and not do.

Keep us updated, Carmela!

When I brought Nanook into the vet the vet took a careful look at them, and then brought out a vet book with illustrations to show me what the glands were.

Then he told me a very funny story about a neuter he'd done where a week later the owners dragged the dog back in insisting that "the balls are STILL on him! You didn't do ANYTHING!" because they thought the glands were the testicles pulled up into the belly.

he said he had to show them the book, too.

here's a picture:

Of course, better safe than sorry but I've had similar experiences with my male dogs and it's always been a gland.

Keep us posted!

GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!!! The "lump" is GONE!! This morning I look down "there" while rubbing his belly and the lump is gone. You were all right and it must of been a gland all along. Thank god!!!! and thank you to all of you for your expertise. I'm glad it disappeared BUT what would make a gland surface like that and then go away??? I'm so relieved its gone, I was so upset that something could of been wrong with my little Brinksie Bear.

Linda, you're so right, I could not imagine my life without Brinks. He's brought so much laughter and love to our home and family. We truly love him so much and to think we've only just begun on this journey of fun but I have to tell you that the thought of something being wrong with him had me so upset and scared of the worst. It made me realize really quick how sadly short their time is with us. Why can't they live for 75 years like that noisy obnoxious bird we have????

It's official....I'm a newf addict!!

Glad he is OK Carmela. Unfortunately, being a newfaholic brings with it pure panic at every little thing that seems not "normal". Newf owners should all have defibrillator's in their homes. And I don't mean for the Newf.
