Robyn....now you have me thinking....if I had seen that I would have just thought it was a big Coyote....We have so many around here..(not far from you)I guess I need to research the difference....One thing we have seen here, is cougar....no doubt. The shame is that people want to kill them on site..There have been no instances with live stock that I know of. Plenty of Deer around.

Julie, I had several people on another list tell me that I had taken a photo of a red fox. :slap: We have lots of red fox around our house, and this boy is NOT a red fox. lol We also have alot of coyote, and the ears are different on the coyote and the wolf. Facial features are different as well.....slightly, but different.

IN the days before I started researching all the LGD breeds, I probably wouldn't have know or been able to see the difference in the coyote and the wolf, but learning about the dogs has taught me to look for differences in ear set, tail set, nose structure etc.

But, a woman that I am friends with who worked for sometime in TX on the red wolf project, saw the photo and tells me that it is in fact a nice shot of a red wolf......

It was amazing to watch him. The coyote we saw that day would run like crazy when they spotted us. This guy just watched me and sauntered around, marking his territory before moving on a nice even pace.

Julie, the legs are different too.....I notice that my akbash has legs very very similar to the wolf. They are spindly looking and look like they really don't fit on the body right.

Hmmm. I would have said it was a coyote, too. We have them here, but now I'm wondering, considering what you are saying. I wouldn't have thought we had rattle snakes here, either, but a huge nest of them was found about two blocks from my house this summer!

Nina, you should watch close. In your area, there is a good chance you have some that are wolf/coyote cross. Many dna tests on the coyotes in the southeastern part of the US are showing that they have wolf dna in them....

Robyn...I did notice the leggs are wolflike...I am not familiar enough on the ear set.. I can tell you I do know a fox....much shorter legged and long bodied. way more tail and coat. I love to watch the fox around here with their kits in the spring. Consider it a priviledge..another animal that gets killed on site for eating chickens..

WOW, I didnt know we had wild wolves in MO. I could have sworn I saw one years ago, and thought if thats what it was, it must have escaped from the Wolf Sanctuary at Tyson Research Center not too far from here. They spotted a black bear in my town a couple years ago. Someone took a picture and video of it in their backyard about a mile from me. When my vet heard on the radio they had numerous sightings of a black bear in Dittmer, he called me to see if one of our Newfs was loose, as did several of my friends and family.
Your photo makes me wonder if some of what I thought were large coyotes were actually wolves.
Nice pictures

Ceder Valley, you probably aren't too far from me....I would imagine that you do have wolves there.

The conservation people around here say that the wolves are in Arkansas, not here in Missouri....but, I have to wonder if, before they released those wolves in Arkansas, they showed them where the state line was!

Mary is more up by St Louis, and I am north of Springfield...What is the difference in a red wolf and other wolves ? I have wolf prints all over my house...love Brender...I think that is what makes it look Coyote...

Red wolves are from the Mexico/Texas area. They are smaller and well, red.

There are Canadian wolves that were released into the Yosemite park region that are quite large, and tend to be more like dogs in that they will kill just for the sport of it. Meaning they will kill and leave it. The Montana and Wyoming ranchers are having a heck of a time with them. They are killing out packs of LGD, and then killing or maiming the livestock and leaving them lying in the fields.

McKenzie Valley wolves are very very large. I saw one that was mounted, and it made EVERY dog on my place look tiny. His feet were huge and he was huge.

Different regions have different types. Size, color etc....

New Mexico has had a problem with the red wolves stalking kids waiting for the school bus, stalking ranchers out riding their horses etc....
