When to spay?

Since all my dogs over the years have been male. Jasmine has me stumped and she's not here yet.I've heard most vets like to do a spay before the first heat.Which is usually around 6 months or so????
I know males should be older before being fixed as it can affect their growth.(So I've been told)
Let me know, Karen
p.s if this has to be moved to a diffent forum.Go ahead. Thanks K

We have had one female dog and the vet recommended that we have her spayed around 6 months of age.

Here is an article that I recieved from Peter Manniate (thank you again, Peter).

The author brings up several very interesting thoughts that seem to be well supported by sound science and not antedotes.

It is longish, but I think worth the time and effort.

I hope it helps you in some way.

Is that an open can of worms I see? ;) I think there are as many opinions as there are members here.....

I think the best balance between risk vs benefit can be found spaying about 6-8 weeks after the first heat, definitely before the second heat, assuming that you will be able to supervise your girl closely to prevent an unwanted mating.

Edited to add.....that should keep the age in line with the above article. ;) Also, for males I wait much longer, and hesitate to do it at all.

Looks like that can was opened here, too.
Spay/neuter

Differing opinions, for sure. I'm in the wait until they're older camp.

We consulted our vet (who we trust completely - she is "the" large breed dog expert in the area and we are so lucky to have her as our vet), our breeder, our friends, and read comments by the many voices of experience on Newf-Net. We also factored in a male and a female Newf who spend every waking and most sleeping moments together and our having NO desire to have puppies. I figure about 45% of the folks on Newf-Net would agree with our age decision; about 45% would disagree; and about 10% don't read the spay/neuter threads!
Not an easy decision, but its a decision only you can make. (Just don't ask Leo, he still can't believe what I did to him!)

Thank you for posting that link, Susan. I knew there was an increased risk for osteosarcoma, but I didn't know the statistics. Most Vets recommend to spay/neuter around 6 months of age. I just think if it's at all do-able, you should wait until they are older. I didn't have Nellie spayed until she was two.

Edit: Spelling
