What's YOUR Routine?

I work a full day, like many of you, and then I also have to work at night as I teach classes online. So I've gotten into a routine with my pups, and wondered how everyone else handles that arriving-home-from-work time and the rest of the evening.

Mine is to open the door and let them immediately out to greet me. They burst out and circle me and every one of them needs to be touched. So they all get pats or rubs before they take off to go to explore the yard, or woods if we have time for a walk before dinner (which is every night except Dec and Jan, when it's too dark).

Inside, after I feed them (they eat first!), I generally sit down on the carpet with some bones and stuffies and play keep-away and tug o'war with the stuffies, and generally let them crawl or lean on me, and they get petted and talked-to. I have to do this, because when I settle down in a chair with my PC to start teaching, they don't understand why I am ignoring them and am sitting there basically staring at my lap(top).

So they get some good attention, then they all settle down for about an hour. Apparently dinner and attention requires a brief nap.

Thennnn.... the whining starts. That under-the-breath whining that drives me crazy! I can barely hear it. But when I look at them they are staring at me. ("Did you just whine?" Silence. I look away. "Hhhhhhhwhinnnnne".)

And the sighing. And the paw-thumping. It's getting near walk time, see. The official walk. The walk that signals we're in for the night except for potty breaks. But I have to be careful here. Too early and they think they get ANOTHER walk later. So I usually wait until 8:00 - ish. We get back by 8:45 or 9:00 and THEN I can settle down to work while they snooze off the efforts of their walk.

About 10:30 - 11:00 it's outside for a potty break, then upstairs to bed. The little ones get on the bed to play with stuffies some more, and Ben settles in on his dog bed. I get down with him and we "talk" a bit, and he thumps me affectionately a few times with his big paw or head, and once the snoring begins (with eyes wide open, of course), I know I can move onto the bed.

Stuffie wars begin. The stuffies growl, the puppies circle, they all hide underneath the blankets, there is some taco-ing or burrito-ing of blankets that takes place (rolling up in the blankets - - them, not me!) and in general, I tire them out.

THEN. I get out my kindle or nook and I get to read. This is the best time of night.

Except. One hour after getting upstairs, one hour after pottying, Ben has to go BACK outside for awhile. Generally he lays down outside for 15 minutes, then leisurely gets up and goes to the bathroom and then comes back in. I have no idea why he does this except that I'm trained to do it, and I don't want him 'suffering'. So I fall for it. Every night.

Then I get my book back out and my day is over.

What's YOUR routine?

Routine? How about when they bark I jump! Works for us since they are with us 24/7.

Sort of our routine:
4:45 a.m. outside and breakfast
4:47 a.m. back outside since they didn't potty because they were too excited to eat
6:30 a.m. outside to potty on the way to the kennel/shop
9:00-9:30 a.m. outside to potty play back inside and get a treat
1:00 p.m. lunch
1:02 p.m. outside to potty inside for treat
3:30 p.m. outside to potty
5:00 p.m. outside on the way to the house
7:15 p.m. outside to potty
8:30 p.m. outside one last time before bed
Playtimes are anytime we get a break, which is often.

We work from home, so up by 7am and outside every couple of hours. Play time...any time we're outside...or we get the "I wana play" look. Bed for pups around 11pm.

Our routine is nothing exciting....up in AM around 6:30, everybody out to potty. Cooper sometimes races around a bit (he loves mornings). Breakfast, then Cooper and I hop in the car to take DD to school and then we go to the dog park or for a hike. Back home Cooper wanders the yard while I take Zu for her "walk" (10 minutes on leash on soft flat ground). Then they both sleep until 3:00 or so when DD comes home from school. Then it's a little pet/romp/play/potty in the yard. Dinnertime, out again. Often these afternoon/evening trips Cooper just lies down outside...Zuzu used to do this too but now she has to be leashed all the time.

After dinner they hang out with us, crashing through board games (Zuzu bombs a board game like no other dog I've ever known) and snuggling while we read in the library till DD goes to bed.

Then one parent reads to DD upstairs while the other one takes the dogs out, gets more wood from the shed, reloads the pellet stove and finishes any leftover dishes. Sets up coffee for tomorrow.

Parents then watch one episode of TV (Dexter is our current obsession) with Cooper stretched out at our feet and Zuzu chewing her stuffie duck's butt next to us on the couch.

They get treats, then they go out for one more potty (Cooper won't budge till he's had his treat - a bad habit DH taught to him!). At this point Cooper, like Ben, just hangs out in the yard until one of us calls him in, then he trots off and goes potty, then comes in.

They sleep pretty well, though I hear some mumbling and grumbling as they settle in. They are gated in the family room as it's mostly covered by area rugs so Zu does not slip.

Pre-child we had such a specific routine of walking, hiking, training, grooming, playtime, food preparation/eating - it was extremely rigid and easily took up all of my free time. I loved it. Now, post-child, we sometimes walk in the forest before work, sometimes not until I get home - depends how cold and dark it is or how hot and buggy it is. River eats breakfast and supper before I do but after my son is sitting down with his plate. Playtime is constant! River is a velcro Newf so I reach down and rub her ears constantly - she's snoring away at my feet as I type. Now that it is so cold out she's been training me to let her out on the back deck in the evenings for an hour nap. I'm lucky to have a big forest with a river in my backyard so our routine is pretty loose now - we pop out throughout the day - could be for 10mins or 2 hours?

Up at 5am, Avlon outside for potty at 5:15am. Comes in and eats at 5:30am. I leave for work at 5:30am with my coffee of course. Wife comes down at 6:30am and her toys are scattered through out down stairs but the Newfy is snoring away. Wife puts her back out at 6:45am for potty time and then she comes in to get treat. She is home alone til 3pm when I get home. Back outside for another potty break and then we walk 1 mile on leash everyday. Back inside at 4pm. I work out for an hour while Newfy sleeps. She gets her dinner between 5-5:30 pm. Back outside for another potty break after her dinner. Around 6:30-7:00pm we walk another half mile. Once we get home she gets another treat and then settles down in her dog bed while we watch TV. I usually head to bed at 9pm. She lays by front door til the wife comes up at 10:30 - 11pm and then she comes in bedroom and sleeps in her doggie at foot of our bed. In summer time she sleeps in master bath on the tile floor. Weekends are pretty much the same but she gets 3 or 4 walks instead of two. All in all I try to exercise her at least 1.5 miles a day on leash. No off leash stuff for her b/c of her right rear knee.

I don't think we have a really strict routine, but we did realize this morning that since it has gotten so cold and now with snow Moonlight is going out four times in the morning before 8:30. Once to pee. Once to eat snow, lay in the snow, and watch for squirrels. Once to poop. Once more to eat snow, lay in the snow, and watch for squirrels. I think we're being "had".

My guys need me to wake them up before I go to work if I'm the one who needs to feed them and let them out. Otherwise they won't get up till at least 9am sometimes later. I think Bojie has trained Riggs very well to sleep in! From all my late nights and all nighters at work back when I was single and living alone with just Bojie, he is so flexible and easy to live with, and I'm lucky Riggs has followed in his footsteps. Boj goes up to my bedroom now by 10pm the lastest, if I'm still down on the couch he'll look down from the stoop on the stairs as if to say, "it's past your bedtime, you coming? Humph".

Um, Elvis won't budge before 9:30am and if he's awake after 9:30pm, the world may be ending. He goes out at 9:30am, naps, out at 3:30pm, naps, walk at 7:30 (ranging from 20 minutes to over an hour), dinner, then outside again at 9:30pm before he's down for the count. If we dare wake him before 9:30am, we'd better make it worth it with carrots or cheese.

we are up at 5 am..out the door go the dogs, walk yourselves in our 2 acre garden.
5.30 they get breakfast
6.00 mike goes to work..we let him out of the gate and go for a walk, mostly off lead in our pastures or sometimes on leash on the road for about an hour...Sometimes have to clean stables and feed horses.the dogs "help"
I shower and get ready for work.....Dogs get a little bone on the way out. They get the whole house and the doors are open to the screened verandah most days, even Winter.
Get home at 5pm...We do not greet out dogs at all when we open the door.....Out they go and they mostly have a quick potty. when they come back in and lie about I call each one in and we have our cuddle one to one. Sometimes we train. Sometimes we go out to train. Sometimes one or two come to train other dogs......7 pm is usually their dinner time
My dogs are very independent and chilled...they go for their own swims in our pond. Come and "help" with chores. They love it when we are finished and sit down with us when we watch TV..that is cuddle time and sometimes bits of training with treats time :)
And mine seem to go to sleep when it goes dark.that is very early in Winter. Lukey never goes out after dark. the girls go for a quick one at about 9pm, because we asked them to

Sounds like Ben has developed a way to have your undivided attention for a few minutes each evening....even if it IS to go back out to the yard for a few minutes.

Mila's a lot like Elvis in the fact that she has a bedtime, usually 7:30-8:00 PM, after which she will not get up from until 6:30-7:00 the next morning, so it's imperative that I get her out to potty before her bedtime...otherwise she WILL hold it for an obscene amount of time (she has willingly gone 14-16 hours between potty breaks).

That being said, the time between her wakeup time and her bedtime is sheer chaos, between work, Mila and our toddler...it's absolute madness in this house. No routine, whatsoever. Just madness, disorder and chaos.

:!rolling: boy, they sure have US trained real well, don't they?

My routine is:
6:30 up to let the boys out and feed them breakfast
7:00 one more potty break before I leave work (leave water out for them all day)
4:45 arrive home, let them swarm me, give them loves and cuddles and send them outside.
7:00 playing or a walk
9:00 one more potty break

and then bed. Moose zonks out on the kitchen tile and Ollie sleeps in a dog bed next to my bed.
