What works best on teeth?? Kinda long

Hi everyone.
Once again I call upon the experts here at N-N. I was checking out Thunder teeth lately and it seems to me that he is starting to have a bit of tarter build up on his rear teeth. His front one's seem OK.
I only feed Canadine lamb and rice kibble and it appears that it's staining his teeth a little. Now I don't blame it on the dog food just the fact that Thunder doesnt chew on anything.
So today I spent some time on past posts on the subject( This is a great site!!) And by all indications it appears that raw bones work the best. So off to the butcher I went and picked him up a couple of bones with traces of meat on it and a bit of fat. I asked the butcher to cut them in half so they would be a bit more easier for Thunder to handle, and so he could get at the marrow inside.
Here lies the problem. He couldn't care less about the bone. He licked it abit and nibbled the meat off abit but doesn't have any interest in it. I read this afternoon on here that it will take them a while to figure it out.(chewing that is).
So I was wondering how long this should take, and if he doesn't care to chew on the bone what would work best to help clean his teeth.
Any and all opinions would be appreciated.

I just ordered a toothbrush/dog toothpaste from cherrybrook...
Does Thunder like peanut butter? Maybe putting some of that inside the bone will tempt him a little more to chew.

Ours chew on marrow bones for hours and hours and it really helps, but we also have a dog toothbrush and dog toothpaste and we brush them as often as we can remember. It takes 24 hours for tartar to set so ideally you should brush everyday but I can't seem to get into that habit with them.

Wrong kind of bones. I give my dogs chicken wings. They get 2 raw wings twice a week. I have a newf that was 10 years old last December and she has never had to have her teeth cleaned.

HB would look DEEP into my eyes..if I approached HER..with a toothbrush..and an evil leer...and have the wisdom to turn on a dime..head in an opp. direction. In my horribly twisted way..I see the use of anything 'dental'..on a canine..as an affront..to their very reason for living/breathing. If a..canine..of whatever size..HAS a reason to be a family member..then it had better be endowed with enough canine traits..that it can eat properly formulated foods, indulge in sticks and raw bones..with the natural cleaning propertys..and all humans should stick (no pun intended)..to mucking about in their very own mouths ..with the amazingly wonderful items which protect our jaws/teeth and gum tissue. There may already be..flavored gum massage creams..for Fidoux..in Liv'a-lite. martini, or Bourbon n Branch. Have the powers that be..made a lip balm..in ..Mothers Milk, or..Sweet Honey n Peach? Perhaps a metallic salve for the nose? If not..there will be..oh lord yes there will! Please understand that I do not mean..to be mean..it is just that the people who make money from items..not really needed..keep pushing the envelope. If they don't already have breath mints for pooch..I'll eat my hat..well, would if had one. As to the bones..and sticks..just give the 'kid'..time..and chewing will start up..on it's own. It IS..a canine thing..and they love the food bits..but the feeling..in the muscles of jaws/jawline..is comfy also. Imagine us..never needing to chew..only having a jello-like slop of something..at every meal..NEVER any chewing..we'd go quite mad. Then..imagine us..with a plate of tasty ribs..yeah..that's the ticket! ;) Bombasticly yours, ina n HB

Hey Jeannie, I read that this afternoon. I think from back in 2003 or so. So all you do is give your dogs two chicken wings once a week or do you split them up? Plus you leave the skin on eh? I would be scared that Thunder would swallow them whole...seriously. I'll have to watch him , but I might give that a try. Wonder how long it will take to see a difference?
I just got home and he still never touched the bone. I put it back in front of him and he just gives it a lick or two.
Yes he loves peanut butter, but one slight problem... so do I and were all out! We will definitely be picking some of that up! I was thinking of peanut butter earlier when he was turning his nose up to the bone.
Thanks for all the responses :icon_bb:

I give 2 wings twice a week. At first he may not know what to do with it. Give him some time and he will learn. You may try breaking it up into his food to get him started.

My dogs love to have their teeth brushed. I use the Petrodex toothpaste and they must love it because they argue over who gets to go first. When I am brushing Katie's teeth Louis is trying to lick her mouth the whole time.

I Brush My Dogs Teeth Three Times A Week, I Use Petrodex And They Just Love It, I Started It When They Were Puppies So They Are Used To It, All I Have To Say Is Lets Brush Our Teeth And They Come Running.

Another Thing That Works Is Raw Carrots, I Go Through 3 Pounds A Week, It Cleans The Teeth And Helps With Any Bad Breath

Be careful of carrots. They turn to sugar in a dog's system just like they do people. They can pack in the pounds

If you think your boy would swallow the chicken wings whole, you might want to try turkey necks. They are bigger and the meat doesn't contain as much fat. If you crush the neck with a mallet the first couple of times, that might entice your boy to try it.

The first time I gave turkey necks to Benson and Glory, they just looked at me with this puzzled look on their faces like "what do you expect me to do with this?" Once they got the hang of it, they love their necks. Benson is a gulper so I keep an eye on him to make sure he isn't trying to swallow it whole.

I agree that carrots turn into a form of sugar, but I don't understand how they could pack on the pounds unless you (or a dog) ate many, many pounds of them. They are so low in calories that you would have to eat 19 pounds of them to add one pound of body weight.

Carrots are higher in sugar than most vegetables but they are still primarily water and fiber. There are roughly 5 calories in one baby carrot so if your dog gets 10 of those a day that's only 50 extra calories a day. Considering there are 3500 calories in one pound of fat your dog would have to eat and exorbitant amount of baby carrots and not get much exercise to gain a lot of weight from them. The fact that they are sugar does not make them a higher caloric source, in fact per gram of food sugar has less than half the calories of a gram of fat.

Jeannie,

I don't agree with you. I have given Dex the long marrow bones for years, and he has not had to have his teeth cleaned professionally.

The whole chicken wings and whole turkey necks will certainly do the trick, but so do the long bones. JMHO!

I thought you weren't to give dog chicken bones????????? I've read they can splinter and cause internal bleeding.
