What kind of crate?

What kind of crate is everyone using for their Newfs? I have a large wire crate that I assume will be big enough for him as he grows, but I'm not 100% sure on that!
Thanks!

The wire crates we have are 48 L x 30 W x 33 H. Ebony has plenty of room them and she's roughly 29-30" tall.

I have two different kinds. Wire and (for well behaved dogs) cloth. Of the wire ones, I have some that are 48 inches long and some that are 42 inches long. The shorter ones and the cloth one are my travel crates, because I can carry them easier and can get the dog out often so he isn't cramped for long periods of time. The longer, bigger ones stay at home where a dog might have to sleep in one or stay in it for hours while I'm away.

But for a puppy, you want to divide a bigger sized crate so that he only has enough room to stand and turn around. Otherwise, you may find he uses one end as a bathroom. EEK!

I just bought an XL crate for Lard Butt, Sydney. 54Lx37Wx45T He fits nicely when needed. He is a HUGE boy. I had to use it this morning since it was raining. You would have thought the world ended! Rain stopped and he was outside at lunch. Sheesh! What a whimp!;)
I'm gone for a while in the mornings and he cannot be left alone with MissP since he's so big and she, sorta still small. I have to supervise them when they are together.
If the big ole goof would stay inside the gates he wouldn't have to go in the crate at all but he jumps them like a thoroughbred at a steeple chase.:!rolling:

I haven't found one big tall enough for Buddy yet, he is 31.5 inches tall at the shoulder, but when he sits, his head is about 36" off the floor. So I need something really tall, will probably have to order online if I want something that folds. Any ideas?

Fargo uses a 48" wire crate. Sadie prefers the Varikennel and has the next to largest one (can't remember the size)

Let's see.... Hannah the mini-newf has a 42" Flip and Fold which she sleeps CROSSWISE in. I keep telling her she's doing it wrong.
Sophie has a 48" Flip and Fold which she sleeps like a normal dog in. And Gabe, being the first child, got spoiled the most. He has the huge crate that Sydney just got. (see above).
It could get by with something smaller. I keep threatening to sell/trade it, but he loves to lie flat on his back spread eagle with his head thrown back to sleep at night. He couldn't do that in the next smaller size.
I have not seen anything over 36" tall that folds.

We use the 48" two door folding metal ones right now; one for Husler and one for Helo. we are thinking of getting soft crates for when we travel since they will take up less room in the Explorer...:D

Solved my crate size problem by not using them.............We only use them for little pups.

Well, from this post I have deducted that I shall need a new crate! I like how the wire ones come with dividers, that's nice!

R Taft, at what age do you stop crating them? Don't you run into chewing problems? And what do you do when you leave for periods of time?

Lola, Buddy is HUGE, wow!

We used the largest crate you can buy here until about 6 months ago. Then we bought 48 in. x 48 in. x 42 in exercise pen & mounted it in the corner of the spare room [now Bärs room]. Bär stands 32" at the shoulder. We also bought the roof panels. It looks flimsy at first, but by mounting it into the corner of a room & adding the roof it is holding him. It was the cheapest way we could do it. He only uses it when we go out for a couple [3-4] of hours. He has seperation anxiety, but it is getting better. Also he used to eat everything he chewed, that too is almost gone. Otherwise he has the run of the house.

We have only crated occasionally when a dog was young but have two sizes of foldable wire ones and 3 sizes of plastic travel types. The only dogs that chew are: naturally, drum roll please-----THE ROTTEN ROWDY RHODEY RIDGES. Thus if we leave they must stay out. Dog houses, barn and lots of places for shelter and it is FL. Everyone else is generally in the house or out if the weather is super perfect. Yards are fenced and gates locked. Besides my husband has convinced evereyone that if they approach when we are not here they will be in big trouble with the dogs and who wants to chance 5 or 6 big ones teaming up. We have 3 yards with dogs in each plus the breezeway. Thunder has never chewed anything sincwe he came to us.

I started with the small plastic one, then went to a larger wire one and then the largest wire one. The wire ones all had dividers. There was a period where Sherman would not go into his crate when I had to leave so I folded the crate and into the basement it went. However Sherman started eating my tv stand, my wardrobe and my couches and I realized that he is somewhat skittish possibly some separation anxiety so up came the crate from the basement. He goes in now with a few treats and seems quite happy to do so. Unfortunately the crate takes up 1/4 of my dining room so now my dining room table and chairs are in the basement. Lucky for me Bria my older Newf can be left out of a crate or I would have to get rid of my couches as well. The things we do for them.

I don't use crates (I've only had adult newfs) but I pay the price in stolen: bars of butter (2 per week -- no wonder Millie's coat is so fine), loaves of bread (one per week), and trays of cookies (one per month). No other damage except the kids' stuffed animals rearranged, appropriated for nesting, etc.

We have a 26 x 42 x 30 wire crate. Gitche was fine in the crate at first but because she likes to sleep on her side with her legs straight out, she outgrew the crate for overnights at about 8-9 months. Since then she has slept in our bathroom. She loves the cool tile floor. The crate still sits in our bedroom covered with a cat bed and blankets. The cats love it!

This was discussed just a little while ago, here's the thread for some more suggestions for you:) http://www.newf.net/Forums/showthread.php?t=82867&highlight=crate+size
I had the largest one that I thought I could buy, until I saw Nessa's. I love the one they have for Pooka, and if I had that size for Boj I would have kept him crated a bit longer I think. However, he was out of the crate at 4 months at night (in my bedroom), then baby gated in just the kitchen during the day when alone, shortly after his kitchen confinement began, he joined the olympic hurdling team, and kept getting through it. He's had free reign ever since. I do have the peace of mind of a dog walker even though he doesn't need it anymore, I've always liked that she checks in on him, and the house while I'm at work. She found the gas on the stove on one day...but, thats a whole other story.

edited to add: until your fur baby is housebroken, it doesn't matter how big the crate is, you should keep the crate divider in to allow just enough room for standing up and turning around. After housebreaking is down pat, you can remove the divider and let them turn the crate into their condo.

Thanks Meg, for the link and the tips! Was Bojie much of a chewer? I'm not so worried about an accident or two once he's ready to be out of the crate, it's more the chewing!
