Very picky food eater

Merlin is starting to lose all interest in food; His LP is advancing & he is losing alot of muscle mass in his hindquarters; back in June his condition got so bad that the vet did not expect him to live out the month, and any vet visits would be in house, the trip to the vets stressed him out too much; we have altered his diet numerous times since then just to get him interested in food, the longest run was mixing his kibble with pet fresh, some egg (He only likes the yoke) & a yogurt with his am meal. This worked up to the Hurricane, then he changed, thanks to a Red Cross package (we were a direct hit),we got him eating again by mixing chef boy-R-dee beef raviioli with a little kibble & pet fresh,+ yogurt; Now it seems if I find something he likes, fresh roasted chicken, pizza (has to be thin crust from up the street,no Ellio's) he will only eat it for a couple meals then refuses it. Right now all we can get him to eat is yogurt, a little at a time & apple sauce. Satin Balls is totally out for him. I'm afraid his days are numbered if he goes on like this. He likes ice cubes & I have also been giving him ice cream which he likes. I was thinking of getting some kind of weight gain powder & added it to the ice cubes to see if that would help. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, I would hate to lose another best friend this year.

Can you add a protein powder (don't know if they are safe?) to ice cream or yogurt? will he eat peanut butter? Cheese? Trying to think of high-calorie protein foods that are not meat...

What about cooking the egg? Scrambled? French toast-type, bread dipped in egg and cooked? My dogs go crazy when the maple syrup comes out (sweet tooths, both of them).

I hope you find some good combinations soon. :(

Pop by the shop or the house this weekend...I'm gonna grab some homemade foods from Hungry puppy for you to give a try.

Merlin on my mind and in my prayers

Snuffles has never liked dry kibble, so I have always used water, canned food, boiled real meat and egg. He pretty much has turned his nose up at canned now. Recently, I have noticed he likes the water from the cooking process and a lot of it. In fact one day for a test, I just gave him the water from boiled hamburger mixed with his kibble, and he ate it. BTW, the hamburger water has been chilled, and fat skimmed off. Also, we also get chicken breast. I slice a part of the breast it in thin pieces, and cook it in a fry pan with water, so I boil the chicken. I then dice the chicken, put it back in the water and mix the kibble in. It is soup, but he eats it fast enough that the kibble is still crunchy.

We also buy wild caught cod fillets at Sams. I cut one in half, put it in a Pyrex dish with a fair amount of water, microwave it, break up the fish in the water. After cooling enough, I mix in the kibble, and he gobbles it down.

BTW, there is a lady that works in a pet boutique/bakery here who has a very old Springer who I just talked to yesterday. She buys Sara Lee Sweet Potato Pie that the dog seems to enjoy.

Sure hope my methods still work here. Snuffles just went back on cephalexin for a huge hot spot that was not responding to normal treatments. And he has lost his appetite on cephalexin before.

I'm so sorry to see this. I imagine you've tried just about every canned food out there, but Elvis went wild over Blue Buffalo lamb & rice canned food after he had a tooth removed. He'll also do anything for cheese, peanut butter, ice cream, and vanilla pudding.
Have you tried pudding? It's sweeter than yogurt, so maybe mixing the two together with the protein powder? Beef stew? Does temperature make a difference? Maybe warming up a canned food would help? Macaroni and cheese?
Sweet potatoes may be a good idea like Leonard said - Elvis loves them so much he stole them out of our pantry. Popping one in the microwave for a minute softens them nicely.

I know this is completely out there, but my cat goes crazy for strawberry poptarts. Like, he loses his mind and we can't have them in the house.
