Vegetable Oil for skin and coat???

I was told to give my dogs a tablespoon of vegetable oil with every feeding to help skin and coat issues. Has anyone heard of this?

Also, I have been giving the adults a spoonful of vegetable oil for about a week now and all of a sudden my newfie Zacc, who is allergic to pork and dairy, developed an ear infection and has scabs under his chin and on the top of his head. Obviously, I stopped the vegetable oil for him as that is the only thing that I changed in his foods. Can a dog be allergic to vegetable oil?

What else can I use for his skin and coat? He will not take fish or Salmon Oil.

Have you tried coconut oil? Elvis is allergic to beef/chicken/wheat/corn that we know of, but has never reacted to coconut oil. We just put a tablespoon or so in his dinner.

We were just discussing this last night-lol, Vin sears the pups meat in a wok before giving it to them. We used to use Olive oil but it doesn't get to the correct temp and smokes a bit so he changed to vegtable oil. He looked into it last night on the web and I think he mentioned that enough of it can mess with the pancreas. I'll ask him if he came up with anything else. Just talked to Vin...he said Olive oil would be better.

Thanks, I will try coconut oil!

Could the vegetable oil be the cause of the sores on his head and neck?

Not heard of anyone using vegie oil, coconut oil is very good for skin and coat and some other things. I use it, but still give 6000mg salmon oils too, a day.

We use either Wild Salmon Oil and/or Coconut Oil. Ours get the salmon oil daily for life, from the day they arrive at 10 weeks (or older for the rescues LOL), but on occasion we've run out and have used Coconut Oil until we get our order.

Apparently vegetable oils which include flax seed oil or even olive oil aren't giving the dogs what they need because they don't contain EPA or DHA (fish oils do and that's what they need) but contain something called ALA .

OR....Krill Oil which is getting a lot of positive press right now. Krill is also a fish oil: http://healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/krill-oil-for-pets.aspx

PS...if you give fish oils regularly you also need to give Vit E daily because fish oils deplete Vit E in the body. :)

I have been reading more and more of people using coconut oil. But seems to me I remember some issue based on 2 basic types of coconut oil available? Any one have a idea what I am refering too? Sorry I can't be more specific, because I do not remember where I saw what I saw.

I don't know about two types (I bought organic) but it has two useages. I use it as an antibacterial and antifungal (I clean ears with it) My dogs don't seem to care for it to eat, plus I'm not crazy about the smell. Their poop smelt like it for weeks the time I added it to thier meatballs, suppose that's not a bad thing if you like the smell

There are two main types of coconut oil - refined and unrefined ("virgin" coconut oil).
Refined coconut oil are usually made from low-quality coconuts and sometimes chemicals (e.g. chlorine and hexane) are used in the refining process.
On the other hand, unrefined coconut oil is made from fresh, high-quality coconuts, either hand-pressed or manufactured in state-of-the-art factories. Unrefined coconut oil retains most of the nutrients found in fresh coconuts.
Always give unrefined coconut oil to dogs as a dietary supplement.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for the site on coconut oil! It's buy 1 get 1 free right now!!! I just put in an order...I will let you know how Zacc does on it.

Is there anything I can do for his skin in the meantime...he is awfully itchy!

hi! I'm reading through every thread as I can to get whatever info I can find....oils for puppies....what to give and what not to give?

I was reading some of the salmon oil info on a product from petsmart and it said not to give to a puppy under 6 months of age. We give Jedi the mega fish oil - can I continue this with a newf or do I need something different?
Should I start on a coconut oil - for both of them actually!? Coconut was not something I've ever thought of for Jedi but if it is good I can always add it in.

I use Virgein coconut oil and have managed to rretrieve Lukeys coat, when it went awful after he had a severe stress period and grass allergy. Quite expensive, but it has made a huge difference. I alwso give fish (cold water salmon and krill now) oils to my dogs, but I also add Vit E to their diets for the reason that it can cause some issues (especially puppies according to some)
