Vacuum reccommendations, PLEASE!

Which vacuum do you use to pick up your newfie's hair??? We have gone through two vacuums and our third is about ready to die. We've also gone through two steam cleaners :( I'm currently looking at the Dyson Full Gear. There have been so many great reviews on it. I wonder though, since it's such a new technology, if it will last for a long time. I'd hate to spend $500 on a vacuum that only last a couple of years. Opinions? recommendations?

Never mind. I did a search on past posts on the subject
So the yellow Dyson is the one to go for then?

We had a Fantom that I even recommended on the Newf-FAQ... it died.

We've had a lot of vaccuums... paid lots of money for them too.

A year or two ago my wife bought a Hoover - I think it was < $100 from K-Mart.

It just keeps going and going and going...

I really want a Dyson Animal but just can't see shelling out that kind of money right now. I had a Hoover Wind Tunnel but that didn't do a very good job of picking up dog hair. Couple weeks ago I purchased a cheapie vacume that is absolutely fabulous!! It's a Dirt Devil Featherlite and was only 60 bucks. Figured if that one quit working I wouldn't be out too much money. I'm very happy with how well it works.

I went ahead and bought a Dyson Animal based on the reviews it got on Epinions, but my husband and I just weren't impressed. Yes, it had great suction, but it was awkward to use the attachments and you couldn't get under furniture without changing everything around.

We have a Sears cannister vac that does a fine job, and it too was a cheapie. I think if I upgrade I may try out the Dyson cannister which I believe you can only purchase online. Like I said, the suction was awesome and I would expect I'd find their cannister more to my liking.

Terrasage, I think I saw a Dyson canister at Linens N Things one day. I use the Oreck upright and canister - they seem to be doing fine. Easy to maintain myself too. Plus, I still like using bag systems cuz I don't like to deal with all the dust when dumping it into the trash... and they're easy to haul around the house cuz they're light. Got mine on (reconditioned) on ebay, so they were pretty cheap.

I'm in need of a vacum myself. The Kirby has gone loopy. We had a Rainbow demonstration and I was quite impressed. But geesh I'd rather spend that money on dog shows. I'm not sure what I'm going to go with. This is a one cat and soon to be three dog house hold.

I too went out and bought a Dyson....have to say that it worked very well, was a tad awkward with attachments, I ended up returning it and buying a different vac for one reason, and one reason only. It was wayyyyy too heavy, I found myself sweating each time I just ran the vacuum. I have both low pile and shaggier carpets, was ok on the low pile, but the shags were a horror. Was a great workout but I'm not looking for a workout each time I vacuum. I ended up buying a Bissel lift-off...at least then I can easily carry up and do the stairs, does a good job on hair and if by chance it doesn't last "all" that long, at least I didn't spend a mint. Just thought I'd give my experiences

When we purchased our vacuum the Dyson was not on the market. I have friends in England with an outside dog that really like the Dyson. We purchased a Miele based on recommendations from newf-l. It works well, great suction, but need to routinely do maintenance on the electric turbo brush. Not hard to do, just loosen some screws, cut the hair from the beater bar, and then clean the hair from the wheels. The beater bar is not expected to do all the work, just loosen things for the suction to do its job. We do go through bags regularly. If there is any complaint, that would be it, but I'm sure that has nothing to do with the fact we have a 2 dog household, and had a 3 dog household for several years. One way to reduce the amount of hair is to rug rake before vacuuming. Did I mention we also live on a dirt road???

I like the Miele, and think it does a good job, even though I almost had to hock the first born to purchase... :D

I like the Simplicity I bought last year. There were 2 other vacuums that were discussed on newf-l, Simplicity and Sebo. Both expensive but I'm not regretting the money I spent.

I have a bagless Bissell that I paid less than $100 for almost two years ago. It is great. It has several different filters, great suction. It does a really good job on dog hair and dander. I wonder where it all comes from. We use the heck out of it since I have WTW carpet in most of the house. And, when it kicks the bucket I don't feel bad about simply tossing it and buying a new one.
