Wanted to update everyone on Libby, my Mom's gsd that bit my neighbor in November. Mom has been having private lessons with a behaviorist every week and she has been training MY MOTHER to work with Libby. Libby is doing good in class and has a smile on her face when she is working. Diane(her trainer) has people and other dogs coming in and out of class(for a distraction)and Libby has been handling new strangers very well. Of course we monitor her very carefully at my house and keep her on leash and practice our training in my fenced in yard together.
Mom and I are walking around the neighborhood together and Libby has a backpack she wears and she seems so proud when she wears it. We stop and Mom tells her to sit and we get our bottled water out of her backpack and we all have a sip and continue on our trip.
Remi loves Libby and we graduated from our second obedience class and have joined Mom's private lesson. Remi has had to learn to ignore Libby while we are in there working and it has been good for him to learn to focus on me not Libby.
Diane thinks that a lot of the problem has been my Mom. I don't know how someone can be a drill sergeant to 4 children growing up and become so meek with her dog. She also thinks that Mom is very nervous and confuses Libby with her commands that end in a question mark!Sit? Please? Anyway there is no denying that Libby is very protective of Mom so until Libby has a lot more training and Mom can become the alpha neither is to be trusted!!! Thanks again for all the kind words and advice and a special thanks to Susan for the pm that got all this rolling. And Leslie for the advice and Nasus for the muzzle idea and I could go on and on. Hopefully a wonderful dog can modify her behavior through the help of a patient trainer and a Mom that loves her, so she can lead a happy productive life. Thanks again, Darby
