Hi Folks,
Gander Bear, at 12 years, 10 months of age, had his semi-annual vet exam and wellness check (blood tests) today. Only thing vet noted was that Gander felt more "boney" than six months ago which is not surprising as he has lost about five pounds. Dr. Rick wants me to fatten him up a bit which, unfortunately is easier said than done for Gander Bear; I have been trying to do this for the past 12 years with no success.
Today's visit was extra special as my use of turmeric capsules as a supplement had been questioned on Newf-L. While all my research showed that turmeric is a liver protectant, it was noted on Newf-L that the Turmeric User Group on Facebook is suggesting the opposite for animals. My response can be found below. Suggest you read from the bottom up.

Hi Folks,
Gander Bear had his blood tested today and I told Dr. Rick about the concern
expressed on this list for his liver. My vet then took time to indicate the
three items directly related to the liver and in the right hand margin
showed the results from six months ago (when I started Gander on turmeric)
and also from 18 months ago. Chart is attached.

Dr. Rick found the one HIGH value in today's test to be insignificant and
concluded that the numbers suggest normal fluctuation. In other words, the
turmeric does not appear to be doing any damage to the liver. Next blood
test will be in six months time and we'll be watching again for any possible
liver damage.
Newfondly,
Peter

My old guy has been getting turmeric capsules for the past six months with
no ill effects and lots of benefit.
I'll be taking him to the vet shortly for complete blood work and will
compare it to the results from the blood tests to see if his liver has been
affected in any way. I'll post the results on this list so we can all see
what six months of high dose turmeric does to the liver.
Newfondly,
Peter

Animals should NOT be given turmeric in capsule/pill form. Those consist of
95% Curcumin. An amount that high has not been tested on dogs and can
affect the liver negatively with damage to the liver in three months time.
The "Golden Paste" contains turmeric of 3-4% Curcumin and effective for
many animals when made and used as directed. This dose can have positive
effects on the liver.
I suggest those interested in turmeric join the Turmeric User Group on
