Turkey Legs

I've been giving Jordan frozen turkey necks, which he just loves. I've been thinking about turkey legs which have the bone, muscle and skin as opposed to the neck which is cartilage and some muscle. Does giving the leg frozen create any issues where the bone is concerned?

Just as a side question, has anyone taken their newf through a yeast detox program? I'm taking Jordan through one and am just wondering what others have experienced.

I always stay clear of weight bearing poultry bones. They can splinter.

I took Sam through the yeast detox hoping to help her allergies. Didn't help at all.

I feed raw anything any part of any animal. I just do not like weight bearing bones to dry out in Summer, makes them like cooked bones. But I would think a turkey leg would be chomped fairly quick...........But not frozen. Just because i haven't tried it no particular reason.
We have a friend who feeds his dogs whole chickens and rabbits. Fur and feathers, his labradors look magnificent. it does not appeal to me, too visual. But it works for him :) Ronnie

I think That you should read the Topmast raw food diet. I think it specifies never to give weight bearing bones because they could chip the Newfies teeth. Also I think it also says frozen meat should never be given to a dog because it can somehow hurt the stomach. I'm not entirely sure but for some reason those two things stuck in my mind. I think only cooked bones splinter. Let me know if I am wrong. Lily

We do feed frozen vertabrae in Summer, just never frozen meat, of which there would be quite a bit on a turkey leg....Again I have never had any issues. there always seems to be a study on something causing something. I just see how my dog manage. I just know that i have always had dogs with beautiful teeth (as per vet) to a ripe old age and we have had lots of dogs. If you see what Annabelle can do to a bone in a very short period, awesome..........Katy is getting to be a close second. As I said before i just remove dried bones

I have wondered about the frozen meats. So then its best to give completely thawed meats then? Does freezing meat dry out the bones?

No.........But sun does, or jut a dry climate can in a day (like here in an Australian Summer)

Turkey legs are fine for a large/giant breed dog...the weight bearing bones to worry about are on very LARGE animals....Legs of birds like turkeys - chickens etc are fine - they are not carrying that much weight - and most of these animals are slaughtered pretty young...

I agree with not letting them sit out in the sun for long......but most will 'gobble' them up pretty quick (sorry....no pun intended - lol!)

Hi All

Havent posted here in AGES!!! Been in school full time and working....no time for anything. We have been feeding raw for close to a year now. We feed raw anything and regularly do turkey legs as well as whole turkeys and chickens. We dont feed them frozen. I dont think the meat itself will hurt them, I think it is that meat frozen solid can cause broken teeth, although I'm not sure.

No freezing meat is the only way to keep it fresh, but I make sure it is completely thawed before giving it to the pooch.
