That's a Pyrenees, right??

I was taking Uschi into PetSmart and a woman wanted to pet her. She said Uschi was a gorgeous Pyrenees. I politely told her Uschi was a Newfoundland. She says she had a Pyr growing up, they're the best dogs, blah blah blah. I said Pyrs and white and Newfs are black, brown, or black and white... thinking I was giving her an easy, straight forward distinction.

She gave me SUCH a look, "MY Pyr was black!"
I said "Pyrs don't come in black."
She says, "Oh yes they do!"
I suggested she look up the standard on the AKC website, as she stomped away.

Should I have just smiled and nodded while she petted Uschi? Which pieces of ignorance or misinformation do you ignore, and which do you correct?

Maybe we should just print out the standards for all the breeds they guess our dogs are and carry them around. There's no point in reasoning with some people, I guess.

Now that I think of it, a T-shirt with pictures of all the likely suspects would do.

People insist my girl is a lab even though she has the feathered legs, tail, and hairy head. Even after I tell them she's a Newfoundland. I guy didn't believe me and had to look at her webbed feet to be sure I wasn't lying. I mean come on people.

I know, it's the funniest when they disagree with you.
"What kind of dog is that?"
"She's a Newfoundland."
"No she's not."
"..."

You could have said Uschi was just a really dirty Great Pyr.

I have had people who CLAIM to be Saint Bernard breeders tell me that my Landseer is a St. Bernard.

I respond by telling them that if they breed Saint Bernards, they should already know that the black and white color combo is NOT in the Saint Bernard breed standard.

They usually end up stomping away, muttering to themselves.

It's a variation on the horse to water syndrome I think. Or perhaps as my Dad always said, "Convince a man against his will, he is of the same opinion still". In other words- it's a losing battle folks, just depends on how many windmills you want to tilt at that day!

You should have walked right over to the book rack and handed her a book on Pyrs...and Newfs. And then smiled and let her keep petting. :)

I've gotten:
black Saint Bernard
Bouvier de Flandres
Lab
Irish setter (???)
Chow
Leonberger
Mastiff

When I say she's a Newfoundland, sometimes I hear, "She's so small! And thin!" Apparently, most are used to males, more typey and blocky. Females that are leaner of bone just flummox the people I run into. Telling them she is still a puppy sometimes helps... but not always.

I've gotten a BLACK Golden Retriever...really? St. Bernard, Lab, Curly Coated Retriever, Pyr....

Once you tell them, No, she's a Newfoundland, they start in with the, "She's so small!" I then launch into my, "She's at the normal standard for a female-28 inches, 125 lbs..." You learn to get this all down in such a way that you could recite it in your sleep.

I had a woman go through the above, but added, "I've never seen one before, I expected them to be much bigger!"

To which my daughter ( who has no sensor) replied, "If you've never seen one, how did you know what to expect?"

If that wasn't enough, her husband looked at her and said, "If you think that's small, you need your eyes checked!"

We just kind of ambled away. :icon_redface:

I had a lady give the "I thought they were much bigger" remark once, and I replied that she was a six month old puppy, and she said, "Well, then she must be full grown". You just can't talk to some people.

I generally don't mind all the attention that Boomer garners. However, recently we went to a local dog event and I got sooooo tired of answering the same questions. I joked with my family that next time I'll make Boomer wear a sandwich board with the following on it:

- I'm a Newfoundland
- No, really, I'm a Newfoundland!
- My name is Boomer
- Yes, that's an appropriate name
- I'm currently 105 lbs
- Yes, I have a lot of fur and that makes me look bigger, the bitches dig it :clown:
- I'm just a puppy. 10 months old!
- I'll be about 150 lbs when fully grown
- I eat a lot now but will slow down when I'm older
- Yes, I get hot here in Florida. I like AC, ceramic tile, and splashin' in the pool.
- I got him from a breeder near ______
- I don't know if they have any for sale now....
- It's none of your business. How much did your wife/husband cost??
- Yes! I'm friendly! Puh-puh-puh-pleeeeeeeeze PET ME!!!!

Love the sandwich board! Dawn, I can't believe that both of our Maggies have gotten the "black golden retriever" remark! My Maggie got that one, too. My most recent one was "That's a cocker spaniel, right?" Yep, 110 lb. cocker spaniel. You got it! Actually, I love getting these remarks because they always tickle me so much & I get to chuckle...after the person is out of earshot. Besides, here in West Texas, we don't see many Newfoundlands! I know of three in the city. There may be more, but probably not many more.

LOL We also had someone look knowingly at Morris and say "Your mommy must have found a dalmatian!" and we told him no, he's a Landseer newfoundland, and he just smirked at us.
