Tank's meal

Tank has stopped eating breakfast and lunch. She will eat around 4pm. So she is getting 1.5 cups of Orijen 6 fish with rice or barley, raw egg, extra veggies of meats that I have left over.
She gets half of an egg sandwich on our morning walk, and then the left over crusts of my daughters' peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches on the next walk. She also get half a cup of Cheerios in the evening during grooming.

Is this enough for an 8 month old girl? I make her breakfast, offer it to her, pick it up, and offer again in an hour. Then I put it back down around lunch, pick it up, offer again in another hour, and then pick it up til 4pm. She will eat her vitamin out of it and maybe a bite or two, but that is it.

I have been reading the threads on this and it seems there are quite a few picky eaters out there.

I was thinking of switching to a different bag of Orijen instead of the 6 fish. She is seeming to prefer the peanutbutter and jelly sandwiches to her egg sandwich, and do not worry it is organic all natural peanutbutter and natural jelly. I am diabetic so I try to buy healthy. I am wondering if she is bored with the 6 fish.

Do yall rotate different bags? I have been thinking of switching to raw but the husband is not ready for that.

Thanks!

I just rotate the food variety,
they also split a hardboiled egg & yogurt daily, snacks, occasional special treats (steak, fish etc.). My 3 are chow hounds though, at least they stay at their corresponding dishes while being fed. Looks like Tank is just picky; Mickey was like this till we got Merlin, so when you get another newf, yeh, you know you are, things will possible change....

I think I remember Gabe not eating as much around that age as well... he kind of eliminated his third feeding... so he just ate twice daily (and still does)...morning and afternoon. I do rotate varieties of the kibble just because I think they get bored. Maybe with the Orijen try the 6 Fish, Regional Red and Large Breed Puppy- rotate. They do all smell differently so I'm sure they taste differently too. I, too, am interested in raw feeding but with working full time and maintaining a zoo (I have to feed fresh foods to the parrots too) I feel a little stretched on time. Perhaps I will give it a shot someday. I do think it's normal for pups to start to slow down with their eating and I think it was about that age that Gabe cut back a bit on his own. Then he hit two years and went through a growth spurt and wanted more again. As long as she's healthy, playful, drinking and otherwise not acting ill in any way I think her diet sounds fine. :)

She sounds like a smart girl! She is probably not eating her dog food since she would rather wait for the egg sandwich and other people food. By 4 pm she is hungry and then eats. It is best if you are going to give people food, to give it AFTER she has eaten her dog food.

Hmmm..if you knew you were getting people food every day and had the chance to eat that over dog food daily.. which would you eat? I think I would be holding out to see if more people food came my way.

I agree with Lynn on the people food.. she needs to eat the kibble first and then would get the people food. If she does not eat kibble...no people food. Or... mix a little of the people food in with the kibble to get the kibble down. Then give her the rest. If she likes the egg.. breaking the egg up in the kibble may take care of both.

What would concern me is since she is not eating a strictly raw diet that is balanced nor is she eating a strictly kibble diet that is balanced.. is she getting the proper nutrient balance for her age. The amount seems to be filling.. it does not mean she has all of what she needs.

While you all are on the subject, I am feeding Brinkley 4 times a day, 7am, 11am, 3pm and 8pm. I am feeding free choice kibble, Orijen large bred puppy, mixed with 3 to 5 oz of chicken or salmon at each meal and one sweet potato mixed in sometime during the day. He is eating 2 to 3 cups of kibble per day. He does not really care for the large bred puppy if served without something mixed in, at what age could I start him on the adult food where there is more variety?

Newf pups are usually weaned on adult food or are on puppy food for a short time, so you can switch Brinkley to adult food now. How old is he now? Pups from about 12 weeks to 5 or 6 months get fed 3 times a day, then twice a day, so you definitely can cut a meal or two out now.

Katy has only had two meals since about ten weeks. She never wanted her lunch or just played with it. I think they are all different. She is now fed at 6am and 6pm
When it is hot she often only picks at her food and eats her favorite bits. But she is full of life and very obviously growing, so I just don't worry about it :)

Thanks, I will change Brinkley over to the adult slowly, he will be six months old February the fourth. Will cut him back to 3 meals a day for now and go to two in a month or so.
