Saturday I took TakotaHonaw to our newf clubs spring Fun Day. He did quite well for his first outing with lots going on all around him (and lots of people and dogs).
Takota was great with people, getting lots of pets and remembering his manners almost every time to sit for petting. Even a few kids in the park that wandered in to see the big dogs said hello to him!
Kota also did pretty good around the dogs although we do still need to work on his reactivity with them. He was good about listening to me almost all the time and re-focusing on me. His manners still need more work around new dogs for sure. I think he would have done better if there had been more space but he still did good. He was even staying calm (and held his down/stay) with some high energy around him!!
After a couple of hours he was getting tired and starting to stress more (and listen less). After I got him focused back on me and calmed down again I decided that was a good time to end his "training" for the day and we came home early. As much as I would have loved to stay for the whole day I knew we needed to leave and end with a positive experience. Kota kept his manners all the way back to the truck!
I know we still have quite a ways to go with his socialization but we've come so far already and I'm very pleased with his good showing. We are getting there and it's only been 6 months! I also wasn't feeling good so coming home early was the right decision.
Takota slept almost the entire 3 hour drive home so I know he was working hard at remembering his manners and being such a good boy. I slept once we got back home too.
I'm one proud mom of our boy... not too bad for a rescue who had all kinds of issues just six months ago. Just getting his obedience solid has helped with so many issues, he LOVES people now, and knows he can't meet them unless he behaves. Still working on excitement but at only 2.5 years I know that will come with time, more training and age.
GOOD job TakotaHonaw... you make us know adding you to the family was the right decision more every day.
