Takota's latest success

Saturday I took TakotaHonaw to our newf clubs spring Fun Day. He did quite well for his first outing with lots going on all around him (and lots of people and dogs).
Takota was great with people, getting lots of pets and remembering his manners almost every time to sit for petting. Even a few kids in the park that wandered in to see the big dogs said hello to him!
Kota also did pretty good around the dogs although we do still need to work on his reactivity with them. He was good about listening to me almost all the time and re-focusing on me. His manners still need more work around new dogs for sure. I think he would have done better if there had been more space but he still did good. He was even staying calm (and held his down/stay) with some high energy around him!!
After a couple of hours he was getting tired and starting to stress more (and listen less). After I got him focused back on me and calmed down again I decided that was a good time to end his "training" for the day and we came home early. As much as I would have loved to stay for the whole day I knew we needed to leave and end with a positive experience. Kota kept his manners all the way back to the truck!
I know we still have quite a ways to go with his socialization but we've come so far already and I'm very pleased with his good showing. We are getting there and it's only been 6 months! I also wasn't feeling good so coming home early was the right decision.
Takota slept almost the entire 3 hour drive home so I know he was working hard at remembering his manners and being such a good boy. I slept once we got back home too.
I'm one proud mom of our boy... not too bad for a rescue who had all kinds of issues just six months ago. Just getting his obedience solid has helped with so many issues, he LOVES people now, and knows he can't meet them unless he behaves. Still working on excitement but at only 2.5 years I know that will come with time, more training and age.
GOOD job TakotaHonaw... you make us know adding you to the family was the right decision more every day.

Well done for your perserverance and also for recognising when its time to end a session on a positive note.

Well done Takota for being a good boy

That's fantastic! It's so nice to see the fruits of your labor. Agree, good job to end the activity on a good note.

Hey Dreamchaser - We were there at the same fun day! My father and I arrived early while you were there with Takota. We had the black newfie Bear. My dad was in the purple shirt and I think he talked to you a little more than I did as I had my hands full with Bear until he expanded his energy from our long car trip!
Takota is so handsome and I thought he was doing a great job listening to you. We very very impressed by his story and your dedication to him! Hopefully next year he will be ready for the boat ride as Bear loved it!

I saw through my Dad's facebook (I am not on Facebook, I am on instagram though), that you were asking for photos. My dad did get one of Takota and I got one of you guys from far away doing some training. They are not the best quality but if you want to get copies I can email them. I will send you a Private message through the forum here with my email address.

Thank you so very much! We did have fun and it was a great training session for Takota! I will surely send you an e-mail so I can get the pictures! I knew at least one person had taken a pic and was hoping someone would see my post, just never thought about posting here. lol

Thank you all... we are very proud of our boy! We had such fun and while I wish we could have stayed longer I knew it was time.
Lots of patience, many hours of training and always doing what is the best thing for Kota has gotten us this far so I'm not messing with that.
Takota has also proven to be very smart (sometimes too smart), a love bug, and has so easily given up on so many issues he came with. He really needed someone to lead him and let him know what was expected. My biggest challenge in his training has been keeping him challenged! After about 3 times, he's got the idea of what I'm asking for and loves to please!
Today Kota is in full out teen boy mode though so he has "forgotten" all his manners! LOL It's an "extra" training sessions day as we work through that. He loves working and that has really helped getting him trained.
Even in teen mode we are proud of where he is going. :)
