Hi All,
What does everyone do for their Newfs in regards to vitamins/supplements?
My Newf is a little bit over 7mos and I am feeding him Loyall adult maintenance feed made by Nutrena (recommended by the breeder). The breeder also recommended a supplement by NuVet Plus, all natural. The supplement is kind of expensive ($55 for 90 wafers) and was wondering what everyone else recommends?

thanks!
Susan

Hi Susan,
Lots of breeders push the NuVet stuff. I personally think there is wiser use of your supplement $$$.
Most on here add fish oil and some form of glucosamin/chondroitin joint supplement. Ester C is also a widely used supplement.
Most all of these can be bought in the "human" form cheaper than those specifically designated for canines.

We only add fish oil. But we don't regard it as a supplement, it's a part of their daily diet (we feed raw).

We give fish oil & glucosamine/chondroitin. The fish oil is the one for dogs recommended by lots of folks on here (Vital Choice) and the gluc/chon other is a human version.

We used to give different things than we do now that they're older.

Puppies and adults (for life) get Wild Salmon Oil. Ours like liquid. A lot. :) But it has to be good quality. They will not touch Grizzly brand. None of them. We used the wild salmon oil from the Wholistic Pet for years, but now we get it from a supplier in 5 gal buckets, (but we have a LOT of dogs who get it daily).

And we used the Wholistic Pet Joint Support Powder. Has everything they need and you can put it right on their food. Plus it's organic.

I used to use Cosamin DS, or Gycoflex III and both are very good quality supplements, but I found I like the organic powder better.

Here's the link for The Wholistic Pet. I highly recommend their products. The Salmon Oil is under "Skin and Coat" and the Joint Support powder is under "Joint Support" http://www.thewholisticpet.com/products.html/

The boys all get Glucosamine and Gracie gets Microlactin daily.
All get Wild Pacific Salmon oil.
Fortunately they devour everything in sight so it's all added to their bowls of kibble.
2 of the boys have SAS so I add Co-Q10 and also give it to Gracie.

Hi
I have given different supplements at different stages. As a puppy for the first 2 years, I gave a joint supplement (I use ubavet), salmon oil, vit C, kepl/alfafa blend. As an adult, I give salmon oil, joint supplement and B complex vitamin. I feed raw. My approach is not to oversupplement. Its preventative maintenance but some diets really go overborad with supplements. A good diet is more important IMO.
all the best,
Marina

Not to cut in, but can you recommend what amounts of those you'd give to Moose (five and a half months old, 70 pounds) and also where you get them?
You can get these supplements at most drug stores or health food stores. 1000 mg of gluc/ chon and ester c is good. You can increase as he matures.
