Strange night-Way to go Apache!

Last night I stayed up until 12:30 watching a movie, then went to bed. About 15 minutes later Apache woofs to go out, something he rarely does and never right after we go to bed. As I'm letting them out, I notice a car at the end of the neighbors drive way, just sitting there with their lights on. (Across our 3 acre horse pasture) a few minutes later it drives slowly up their long driveway, stops at their garage and turns off the lights. I see the dome light come on then go off. I don't turn any lights on when I turn dogs out, as I can see fine by the light on our barn. So I went and turned on all our outside lights. We have a wrap around porch with canned lights so it lights up like a spaceship. LOL Then went and got Allen up. By the time we got back in the dining room, the car was gone. Allen went outside on the porch just to make sure, but they were gone. Dogs came back in with Allen and we went back to bed.
I laid there for a while and said I thought I should call the police, to make sure they don't come back. (Our neighbors have a huge RV trailer and he's the President of the local camping club so it's pretty obvious when they aren't home) Allen said no that after the light display he doubted it, plus they probably figured I'd called them anyway. But I said what if they have a police scanner? So I got back up and called the police, they had an officer over there in about 10 minutes. Not bad for a non emergency- out in the country call, and did a thorough job of looking around the house and making sure everything was still locked up. (Was looking through binoculars by this time) Turned out because of a sick granddaughter, Ruth didn't go camping with John and she got home around 2:30 a.m., and thought she saw a light in the back yard after she went to bed, so evidently the police came back out to check again later. John got home late this morning.
Now if Apache had wanted out even 5 minutes later they would have already had the car lights turned off and I wouldn't have noticed anything. The dogs barked a little bit when they went out but not their normal something's wrong bark. Super Hero Apache saves the day! Or at least the neighbors stuff, and it could have really been bad if they'd gotten in and stayed in the house for over an hour and Ruth had come home and surprised them.

Alright Patch-A-Roo. What a way to end your birthday by giving someone else a gift of safety.

See Karen, if you didn't have "close" neighbors, the lights would have never scared them off. :)

Allen thinks they were hanging around the area waiting for me to turn off the lights and go to bed and that Apache sensed something just wasn't quite right. Like I said he rarely gets us up at night and he's never ever wanted out before when we'd just gone to bed. He was quite insistent that he had to go out too, which is also rare. When he does have to go out, it's around 4 or 5 in the morning and he'll woof once, then quiet back down for a while. Last night it was woof, woof, woof and a few seconds later woof, woof woof. He's only ever done that if he thinks he's going to be sick, one end or the other which he's not done either of lately.
