Straining to pee

Straining to pee-Updated

Boaz seems to have trouble emptying his bladder. He goes what seems to be his regular amount, then one or two more times during the same potty break he'll pittle a bit more.

We noticed this first at last night's pottie, then again for the first pottie of this morning. I gave him a cranberry softgel this morning (cranberry 140mg, vit C 100mg, vit E3 IU). His water intake seems normal.

We've had a rough week. Many days they had to hold it longer than normal because we were gone unusually long. I'm wondering if this caused the issue.

The cranberry supplement (for humans) says 1-3 caps per day with water. Any suggestions for dosage on this, and when should we consider seening the vet?

Thanks for any help.

Zeke always goes 3 or 4 times when he goes out. As for a UTI, when he had one as a youngster he was asking to go out every 5 minutes with only a few drops at a time. I'm sure others with more experience will chime in..I'll keep him in my thoughts today and pray that it's just a change in the schedule.

Thanks Dawn.

This is very unusal for Boaz. He's always been a one and done kinda guy, as far as peeing goes. And he doesn't bother us about going out unless he really has to go, then he is relentless. He's our talker. He's been talking alot, so I think he's uncomfortable.

Kind of sounds like a UTI to me, and I have heard that holding it for a long period can cause one...though don't quote me on it; I'm not entirely sure of the accuracy of that statement!

I know with Snuffles and myself, if we have to hold pee extra long with some quanity, I think the prostate clamps down so tight, it is hard to get it to fully relax to let things flow. I know with me it has gotten a bit worse with age. My Dr says I have a slightly enlarged prostate, but no lumps and bumps as he says. Is Boaz a older dog?

I think Dogs that are suddenly required to hold it longer, like their owners went from being home to working all days are more prone to it. I know of at least one dog who did not have trouble with UTIs till the owner went to work.

Took a sample to the vets and they tested. All is good, nothing out of whack at all. We will be making a visit tomorrow to get checked out. It's time for an annual visit anyway. I'll post an update when I get back. Thanks all!

The skies decided to thunder and open up, pouring rain again today. Loading up the boy in the car felt like it would be a feat in itself because I'm feeling a bit under the weather. When the rain and winds came, I decided to rethink today's plan. I wasn't up for the added layer of activity that comes with a huge wet dog.

We're going on Friday instead :)

Yes, more back on track since Saturday. Hope that's all it was. Annual check at the end of the week will help get to the bottom of this, I hope.

Vet check better than I had hoped. Boaz has had frequent elbow issues, and we seem to have the inflamation under control :groovy: so I am very happy about that. We are going to decrease the aspirin and incorporate glucosamine and see how he does. Unrinary problem is gone, so probably just a potty break issue, and we'll keep an eye on that.

Oh, and he needs to lose 5-10 lbs :(. Glad the elbows are felling better so now we can get a bit more exersize

Glad to hear the news. The weight loss isn't to bad....5 to 10 lbs wasn't to bad for us, we stalled at 10-20 lbs and now we are working on the 20-30 lbs.
