Stem Cell Therapy

I wanted to post this in a different thread but was thinking of it in RE to Moose, and to Zuzu and a few other of our challenging NN Orthopedic cases.

When we first moved to CT I looked into stem cell therapy and found someone doing a procedure that is experimental, and therefore not covered by insurance. It was also recommended more for older dogs (the vet had had excellent results in older horses and older labs) than for young 'uns.

Now, I've just found out that the acupuncture/chiro vet that we see has become certified in a different kind of stem cell treatment, one that she says is *not* experimental for orthopedic issues and arthritis, and is seeing success on younger animals as well. She says she'll give me paperwork for Zuzu's insurance if they want it.

Here is the link to her page. Thought it might be worth investigating if anyone in your area is pursuing the same therapy.

I've heard of this type of therapy and am interested to see how well it progresses.

wonder how many treatments an average newf would need across its lifetime

Sounds so promising and the cost isn't as high as I'd imagined. It would be great, Mary, if Zuzu's pet insurance will cover this. Keep us appraised.

I saw the vet today for Cooper's chiro appointment and she told me some
insurances are covering it and it is all done in one day, in the office. The dog is under anesthesia for the harvesting but then usually just needs sedation for the injection or IV after the cells are processed.

I will go next week with Zu and update then...

Oooooh, I will look into this for sure! I already know that I don't want to put him through surgeries (considering just the tip of his hipbone is in it's socket, and then he has multiple fusions and bad elbows...it would just be too much strain on him). So this is definitely another possibility. Thanks for sending it my way! Let me know how it goes with ZuZu.

That is what they are doing here in Australia, still not covered by insurance and costing about $1200-$2000, depending on the waht and where..we have seen some amazing results. My ortho guys are right into it and very happy with results

I have heard that this is promising therapy. Usually the dog has to go back several times. It is good to see that insurance companies are starting to work more with it.
