Sleep or rather lack of.............

Our 5 year old Newf over the past few weeks has decided that breakfast should be served early. The 1st woofs start anywhere from 3:50 am to 4:15 am. Starts with a single woof and then adds woofs with increasing frequency & volume. Nothing has changed in his routine and we went through the time change with no problems. We have tried feeding him dinner later or having a snack at 10:00 pm. So far no success. Any ideas? :grrr:

First time I thought it was the bathroom emergency until I opened the back door and got the 'I always have breakfast 1st and then go outside' look. Temperature is at 60 degrees at night with tile floor to lay on if desired. He also has water.

Thanks

My Lab did that when it was just him and me. No way was I getting up at O-dark thirty! He has a dog door open to a fenced yard if he needs to do his business. I started putting him in his crate until a reasonable hour (for both of us) and setting the alarm. When the alarm went off, he got fed. Asher had the alarm from the first day home. They both sleep in the bedroom now, and don't bother me until 6:30 a.m. when the alarm goes off. I hold up my end of the training and always get up without the snooze. It took a week or so with Koda (Lab) but, he's solid almost three years later :)

P.S. 6:30 is sleeping in for me. Before I retired, I got up at 3 a.m. so I could be at work for a 5 a.m. start time!!

Sounds like he's trying to train you. I would get up to let him out to potty and then ignore him until you are ready to get up. Only do this a few times. Just to err on the side of caution, you could set up a fan just in case he's too warm but it does sound like he's trying to change the rules:devil3:

When Elvis started to do this, someone here suggested that he might be having trouble seeing in the dark. We got him a nightlight and he stopped barking that very night.

Just curious... did you feed him the first time he woke you up "acting" hungry?... Newfs can be stubborn. If he got breakfast early once - he'll try, try, try again... hopefully wearing you down ;)

Katy has a night light, if it is ot on, she gets worried and often wakes us up at about 1 am or 3 am... we are trained to do breakfast at 5 am... how come they still know the time when the daylight hours change in Summer and Winter?

There's a blue LED night light that works great...they can see when needed, but when they close their eyes, it's nice and dark.

Yup I fed Moby the 1st time. Sucker move when you get someone out of bad. This morning I was up for work, OK 4:50 am, before he barked. Will try not feeding him if he does bark.

Thanks all for the feedback!
