depends on where you want him clipped down . I tend to have Beaus feathers and butt area clipped down for ease of keeping him clean and in the summer I clip his belly short but I dont tend to mess with his top body coat unless its just thinning out his undercoat.

Is it to help keep him cool in the summer?

from what I have read the top coat on a newf protects them from sunburn so I wouldn't mess with it, obviously thin out well.

I always clip Beau's underneath short in the summer but he also has a cool mat and coat to help him plus his own personal fan.

Sue M or Jeannie can probably help you with how short his top coat can go as they are the grooming guru's . I have seen some shorn newfs but they are older and cant cope with the grooming schedule

You can clip him down but not shave. If you want the coat to be 3 or 4 in long, then ask for a "puppy cut". The important thing is to discuss this with your groomer and make sure she knows what you want and that you do not want a shave but a trim.

Did you mean a 4 blade or a 4 comb? Both of those will take the coat pretty short. Make sure your specific or you may end up with a coat much shorter then you wanted it to be..:)

I live in an area that is really hot, well into the 100's ++'s F during Summer

We do belly shaves. you cannot see it from the sides even that they are done. the dogs lie on the tiles and are cool. We also strip their coats. It gives them quite a light coat that still protects them from the sun. And our dogs seem to cope well with the heat.

Do you use the Mars King to strip their coat?
