I think it's a terrific way to meet the breed and gather lots of information. My husband and I visited about 4 different breeders before we decided on one. We saw males, females, puppies, watched grooming and got down and played with them all.
My breeder is no longer breeding so I may be heading down that road again myself.
all the best,
Marina

I vote yes! visit breeders. When we went to visit our first breeder, I told her we were just thinking about a newf, & I wanted to see how the children felt around her big dogs. It turned out all of the kids, even the littlest, felt comfortable with all the dogs running around. And she was very understanding that we weren't ready just yet. I imagine all breeders would rather you take your time and make the right decision. And being around the breed will help with your decision. Just be honest about where you are in the decision process.

100% yes we visited breeders before we made our decision and they were very accomodating and most breeders want their potential pet owners to know what they are getting into especially with a giant breed dog so it is encouraged to spend time with the dogs beforehand. Also you get to see the temperament of their dogs and establish a good relationship with the breeder who can be very helpful with questions you may have as the dog matures.

I hung out with Elvis' breeder for several hours, getting to know his adult dogs and a general "newf 101" overview. I am SO GLAD he did that with me before I laid eyes on Elvis, because once I saw him it was alllllll over. Elvis was even already over 4 months old, so he was cute but not the "oh my, stop your heart" adorable the way a 10 week old newf pup is.

If we ever find ourselves thinking about another one, we will have to go meet the breeder when he doesn't have puppies. To me, there is no such thing as "just going to look" when newf puppies are involved!!

Yes, spend as much time with the breed as you can. In addition to visiting a breeder, you can join your NCA Regional club, or attend dog shows. Be up front with the breeder, what your thoughts are. A responsible breeder should be happy to spend some time with you so you can decide if the breed is for you.

Going to a couple of dog shows would be a really good way to get started, meet people & have some questions answered. Remember to wait until after the Newfs have shown before trying to engage people in conversation. You'll see dogs you like better than others. Find out what kennel they are from. Once you decide a Newf is for you, then you definitely want to see breeders & they will want to see you!

If you are anything like me, Don't. Visit. Puppies!!!!! You'll come home with a couple of them;) There is nothing cuter than a Newf pup:) Seriously, visit breeders and see the adults, watch them being groomed; it's much more involved than doing the dogs in your pic. Get drooled on!

we don't have any dog shows around here the nearest one would be a 6 hr drive from us...sadly
Might still be worth it.We went to a newfie Specialty show , before we had our first newfie. we met some breeders and we chatted after the Show to some. it was great to see a few newfies together. We lived 7 hours away too. but we made a little mini vacation out of it.
Will show them you are keen :)

We didn't really visit with Indy's breeder. I really regret not having the information from this forum at that time, but I wouldn't trade her for the world. The second time we contacted several breeders and found one that we could visit. We spent several hours with the breeder asking questions and visitng with her dogs. We weren't even sure that we were going to get a second Newf at that time, but we were so comfortable with the breeder that we couldn't resist. As a result, we have Cosmo. It is amazing the difference in the dogs and the breeders. Make sure you do your homework. Know what you are looking for. Talk to the breeder about the personalities of their dogs and what would work well with your group. Even if you aren't sure about getting a Newf, most reputable breeders will be more than happy to take the time to talk, educate, and mainly show off the breed that they love.

Yes. We went to two breeders and finally picked the one we thought was best. It helps to see the parents and how loving they are and the other animals to see how well taken care of they are.

Yes, absolutely visit breeders! Spend as much time as you can familiarizing yourself with the breed before making a decision. The idea of a Newf can sometimes become romanticized in peoples' heads and I think if everyone interested in a Newf went out there and spent some time with the reality (massive, drooling, shedding, not-always-sedate Newfs) before bringing one home, there wouldn't be nearly as many Newfs in rescue. They are amazing dogs, but not the dog for everyone. Not a dog for the faint of heart, short of time or slim of wallet!

Also, visiting breeders to gets some hands-on Newfie experience could also help you in making the decision as to what breeder you may want to go with if you decide, after all, to get yourself Newfed!
