Shampoo

No longer use Mane and Tail, just did not like it and it felt greasy, so it was a personal choice. I know a lot of folks use it and love it.

I use a couple different shampoos, depending on the purpose (one for showing, one for general use). General use: Mink Sheen. It is a wonderful shampoo, can be used often, is a 4-in-1 shampoo (shampoo, conditioner, anti-bacterial, natural insect repellant). Love how soft and shiny it leaves the coat, and the smell is wonderful! Dilution 8-to-1.

For really dirty dogs, I take an empty gallon plastic milk jug, mix 1/4 c of green Dawn dish liquid and fill with water. Shampoo the dog with this first, then follow with a second shampoo using the Mink Sheen. This will clean the grimiest, smelliest dogs and leave them fresh, soft, and shiny!! :)

I don't have trouble with the dirty coats; just getting upset with the high coast of shipping. Can you use the dawn on a weekly basis?

Post #2 exactly what I do after much experimentation. LOVE Mink Sheen.

Dawn is an intense cleaner that strips oils and everything else so I wouldn't use it weekly.

Keep it on hand for emergencies, like skunking which is extremely oily. Also the green apple anti-bacterial dawn is the only thing that gets stink out of neoprene (water training).

I would not use Dawn on a weekly basis - only for those times when an good bath is in order!! However, the Mink Sheen can be used weekly and it is a great shampoo!!! I order the gallon containers, and with 4 dogs, I usually order at least 2 gallons at a time - that way I save a little on shipping costs. You might also try looking around at some of the shows to see if one of the vendors carry it.

I like Mane N Tail for routine use too. I also use Dawn but only if the dog is extremely dirty or in the greasy areas (like under ears).

I also like a vinegar and water rinse...good for the coat, good for the skin and makes them SHINE. I always put conditioner on ONLY the feathers and chest...then rinse that out, but the vinegar and water, I leave in. I also spray down feathers, tail, chest and groin with Ice on Ice and leave in.

For shows I use all kinds of things. I like Plush Puppy, Spectrum One by Chris Christensen, and Panagenics. I've found that some shampoos work better on some dog's coats than others do. Just like people.

As a vet tech we had a mastiff pup named "Monster" come in covered with hot roofing tar. Therapy included multiple bathes with Dawn to get the tar out. It did the job.

Maggie never needed a Dawn bath, but it was always on hand.

This reminds me of a kitten that came into my grooming shop years ago. The owner said the kitten fell into a pot of soup and was soaked with grease. She said she washed the kitten but couldn't get out the grease, so she called me. She brought the cat in and I scubbed her with dawn dish soap. She went home nice and fluffy. The owner couldn't believe it. I never told her what I used.

Another one we use is neem and propolis soap or rosemary and lavender soap. Both are natural ones and l have used them on myself and as they don't affect my eczema they are useful for regular washs which Max gets as his white bib is normally a yellow or dirty brown colour

I use Palmolive first, then whatever we've got around...I often get the leftovers from friends that didn't like soap A or B for whatever reason...I'm far less picky, so we just dilute it and go with whatever we have on hand. honestly though, I find little reason aside from restoring colour to use anything other the dish liquid...it works awesome and rinses super, super clean. I use "The Stuff" as a leave in conditioner, and we're quite set to go on our therapy visits. We don't bath once a week unless it's really required...it's normally enough for me to bath him once a month or so, mostly to keep him smelling fresh. In between he gets blown out regularly and topped off with ice on ice or the stuff and we are good to go.

I use mane and tail for routine bathing & for freshening up in between vinegar and water.
