Ok guys. It’s renewal time for Thor’s insurance plan and I just wanted to check and see if we have a good plan.

Annual Max: 15,000
Annual Deductible: 500
Reimb: 80%
RX Drug: No
Wellness Rewards: None
Dental Rewards: No
This is 36.01 per month.

What’s covered:
All eligible pets are covered for:

§ Accidents incl. poisoning,
swallowed objects, hit-by-car,
dental trauma, & more

§ All illnesses including cancer

§ Surgery and hospitalization

§ Laboratory & diagnostic testing

§ X-ray, MRI, CT, ultrasound

§ Breed-specific conditions such as
hip dysplasia

§ Chronic conditions such as diabetes

§ Alternative therapies including
acupuncture and rehabilitation

§ Optional wellness and dental
Pre-existing conditions are not
covered.
So, what do you guys think? I always feel so lost when it comes to insurance! We don't need the RX plan because he does not take meds now and don't want anything for the dental either.

i think the price for the policy is reasonable. the deductible isn't bad and the limit seems ok unless something really crazy happens.

you *might* want to consider the Rx...i hate insurance because it's one of those 'what if' situations and it sucks to throw away money on something that might never be needed, I will say this. at 120lbs, the cost of some prescription medications will make your pants fall off. Seriously. It can get a little insane. Maybe tossing another 20/month into Thor's bank account is a better way to go than upping the insurance, just be prepared for the bill to shock you if he needs medication.

I agree that it is probably a good idea to put a little aside each month for emergency meds, rather than have it included in the policy.
As noted, some meds are insanely expensive if you need them. But if you don't need them, you'll still have the money in the account.

Ginny, Embrace has plans with meds and without. It depends on the plan but it is more expensive, not just a few dollars to cover meds.

I second the need for Rx coverage. He may not need them now, but if he develops a chronic condition that requires them, you won't be able to get it covered later. Also, if he ever has any surgical procedure, the antibiotics and pain meds are quite expensive if you can't get them at walmart, etc.

We pay for a more expensive coverage for Maggie with all her issues. We have Petplan at about $80/mo. We have a $100 deductible and get 80% reimbursed. Even without major issues, we visit the vet enough that we've gotten our money back every year (plus some).

That's probably way more than you need right now, but I'd say pick a plan you like, because if he develops any issues, you can't ever change b/c those conditions would be pre-existing!

I have Embrace, and I believe the same deductibles as Thor, but I included the RX. My lab was on thyroid & Rimadyl for a long time, and I was at the vet every paycheck, and now have a cat on $90 worth of med's every month forever. ( although I'm checking into Walgreens for some of it)

My point is, you never know what's going to happen, and I rather have the insurace take care of the medicines. I think I pay $48 per month. I don't even notice it anymore.
