Just came across this recipe for 'pill pockets'... Worth a try, I think!

Homemade Liverwurst Pill Pockets

Ingredients:

3/4 cup plain shredded wheat cereal
3 ounces Liverwurst (room temperature)
2 ounces cream cheese (room temperature)

Instructions:

Place shredded wheat in a bag and crush by using a rolling pin
Mix liverwurst and cream cheese together until smooth
Mix with shredded wheat
Roll into small balls (the size of gum drops)
Store in the refrigerator in a re-sealable plastic bag or container
Treats will last about 7 to 10 days

These pill pocket treats are really simple to make. When it's time for your dog to take his medicine, simply take a "dough" ball and hide the pill in the center. Then offer it to your dog like a treat.

I hope these tips and this recipe for pill pockets will help your dog take his pills!

For doggies or peeps? hehe

Id probably have to hide these from my husband as he would think it's to be spread on crackers:D He loves liverwurst and creamcheese and would think the shredded wheat was a triscuit. lol

Thanks! This is good to know, 'cause I needed pill pockets awhile back and was frustrated by the cost. Nice to know I can make my own.

Oh, this is great! For about a month, Byron would only eat his medication if it was in a pill pocket and we were going through 2 bags a week (he was getting 30 pills per day). He is now back to liking hot dogs, but I think he'll get sick of them soon and we'll need to go back to the pill pockets, so I will probably be making this very soon!

Nicole and Dan~ how is Bryon doing--I think about him a lot...I wish there was something that they could do to fix him up--he is so gorgeous in your picture BTW:D

I do it the easy way. I just swipe the pill through the "doggie container" of cream cheese. Or, I squish a bunch of pre-cut Braunschweiger around the pill and they slurp it down.

Mira is too funny, tho. She gets a Proin (for incontinence) every day and she'll ONLY eat Philadelphia Brand WHIPPED cream cheese. Won't take the generic, and won't take the regular (not whipped) version. LOL

I don't like to use anything that they can chew. With slippery things (like the cream cheese), they just take it and swallow.

Thank you SO much for this recipe! I go through a bag of Pill Pockets a week (well almost). Maddy (my Berner) takes Atopica for her allergies; they are horse pills and the only way I can get them in her is via Pill Pockets. This recipe will save me a plethora of money! YaY!! :allg069:

He's in the hospital for 48 hours getting his final chemo treatment. The neurologist gave us a 5% chance of it helping him at all, which we know is slim. But, my husband thinks that if there is a miracle to be had, then we need to do our best to make it happen. I'm eager for him to come home as I want his last days to be in peace.

We are taking it a week at a time. We'd tentatively prepared to put him down next weekend, but if he's strong (he's been very chipper over the past week), then we'll hold off.

Anyway, thanks so much for asking, I've received so much support here and it's always appreciated.

I plan to make this recipe for him tomorrow night...I think he'll enjoy it more than his hot dogs! :)
