Reading Progesterone results

There are some on the internet, but you can't go by those numbers...every bitch is different and so will her progesterone numbers.

It's not so much a number to breed at, but the rate of the rise from one test to another that signals ovulation.

Thanks Lou Ann - that has put my mind at reast a bit because my vet dosent give very accurate levels - he said he gets the results as a 'below base line' - 'above base line' 'huge change' reading which others told me was no good - i expressed my concerns and he said it was irrelevant what numbers she was at,and that we only need know when she dramaticly rises.
So far :
DAY 1 - 27/12
DAY 3 - 29/12 1ng
DAY 5 - 31/12 2.5ng
DAY 9 - 4/1 2.5ng ( He said still at base line)
DAY 12 - Re test

She's not at baseline but is clearly rising, she is still early though.

Because my girls don't ovulate until much later in their cycle I don't even start testing until day 9.

Some labs will give you a chart but don't by those.

OMG Susan...it's so nice to see that someone else knows about this also!!!!!!

I get so frustrated when I see other people's bitches miss when they are told that ALL bitches ovulate at 5 and breed at that number...years ago when I bred at that number I NEVER had puppies...I educated myself and learned how to interpret the numbers and know when to breed and I haven't had any problems since and my girls always get pregnant.

Have any of you used the commercial progesterone testing kits available to do at home? I have been looking at some of them, but dont know how accurate they really are. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with them.

I have used the in home 'target' test years ago along side with the progesterone tests and they weren't as accurate.

I've never used Camalot farm which I hear are fairly good.

People using their own stud dog are also able to breed as often as they want. I have to be more precise because I only use outside stud dogs and am usually limited to one or 2 breedings.

Lou Ann is the master at knowing when to breed. I always get puppies when I listen to her. A progesterone level of 5 means nothing to me. You have to wait for a big rise and then breed a few days later.

DAY 10 - Vaginoscopy ( as she was in having the Canine herpes vaccine ) - vet estimates Sunday ovulation but we have bloods and a vaginoscopy booked for Friday day 12 - thanks for being my sounding boards guys!

I got a little worried today as the vet said that the length between seasons changing might mean she is infertile - she went 258 days between first and second season, then 209 between 2nd and third

That could be a problem....or it could just be the way she cycles. Cycling times vary from bitch to bitch...I have bitches that cycle every 6 months, just like the "book says they should". Then I have others that havent read the same book (smile)and go every 8 months, and one girl that goes every 4. I have also had bitches vary the length between their cycles, sometimes by quite a bit. IMO there really is no such thing as a "normal" cycle length, as long as she is not showing any symptoms of pyometra, isnt exhibiting any signs of illness, doesnt appear to be in any distress and is able to conceive during her cycle when it does occur. There is a "normal" for each individual dog, but it can vary quite a bit from dog to dog, and time between cycles can definitely vary from cycle to cycle. That being said, if one of mine is having a cycle that is unusual for that individual, we always make a visit to the vet...just to be on the safe side

Sorry but looking at these #s she has not progressed from day 5-9 and by day 9 there usually should be more progression. Not all bitches are the same though. Hopefully on day 12 there will be better #s.

just found out that the vet does not do propper readings just the premate 'ready or not ready' grrrr.....
Update is _ day 12 bloods - still not ready, vaginoscopy said almost ready, mate Sunday.
We took her for mating yesterday ( Sunday - day 15) and they had a 50 min tie.
Bloods again today ( for my piece of mind ) show rising but still not ready - re test Wednesday ( day 17) .... getting worried now ;-(

because we found out that they do not give accurate numbers - its just a colour change test ( even though the vet had been giving us numbers these were 'guestimates' ) so as our girl was heavily flagging/flirting and the vaginoscopy said ready we thought this might mean that the vets were interpreting the colour change as not significant enough

Repro vet did inhouse Premate when brought in to verify if ready for breeding. I was looking at the rise. We ran extra test to see that once hit #. Some bitches can stahl then rise. My vet was doing the progesterone tests daily except for Sunday closer she got.
