Questions for New Groomer

Are there any Newfie specific questions or things I should look for at a potential new grooming establishment when I do an on site visit?

We had a great groomer when we had our Bernese Mountain Dog, but she's a very busy, one woman show and tends to take months to get back to you about a future appointment and I'd like to find something a little more consistent.

I'm a little overly paranoid after hearing the horror stories of Newfies dying from overheating. Our Newfoundland is almost 6 months old and still has quite a bit of puppy fur (his adult fur is starting to grow on his back and some on his legs) and we've been able to give him baths and obviously brush him ourselves but I have a feeling the overall grooming will soon be out of my league.

Also, what's a normal price for a Newfoundland grooming (I'm in the Boston area)? I found one site that specifically said Newfoundlands start at $150. Is that what I should be expecting?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Advance apologies if there is already a post on this subject - I did search and couldn't find anything.

That price sounds about right for your area. I start newfs at $125 and up.

Be sure you are VERY SPECIFIC on what you want done. Don't just say "trim her up" Say I want the paws trimmed and only about 1/2 inch taken off the body. Under no circumstances are you to use clippers on my dog.

Remember your idea of a shape up and the groomers can be 2 different things.

Thanks for the quick reply Jeannie! Your link was super helpful. Should I be asking them how many Newfoundlands they have done or reminding them that Newfoundlands can easily overheat or anything specific like that? I don't know when I would cross the line from being a concerned dog owner to crazy dog lady who thinks she knows everything.

Also, how often should I get Jackson groomed if we're doing the basic, normal brushing ourselves? Our Bernese, was usually groomed at the beginning of every season so basically 4 times a year. Is that too much? Too little?

It depends on how neat you want your newf to look.

I would tell them the newf is NOT to go in any cage type dryer. Tell them you want him hand blown dry even if it cost more. They can comb and dry at the same time and get rid of lots of undercoat.

OH yea, if they have multiple groomers ask to speak to the groomer who will be doing your dog. Lots of information can get lost when transferring from one person to another.

Don't worry if they think you are the obsessed dog owner. You are your dog's only advocate so be sure to speak up and let them know what you want. If they don't like it then you need to go somewhere else.

I know an excellent newf groomer on the Cape if that is close for you. If you want her name, I can refer you. Good idea to get him started young with grooming.
