Questions about pain- NN

Hello all!
Sorry I haven't posted in a while. Just trying to get back into the swing of things and adjust to married life! :)
I am actually posting in order to pose a question for a very dear friend of mine. She has 2 Doxie/Beagle mixes and her male, Iggy, has been showing signs of pain. He cries when Jenny picks him up & groans all the time. She said he is also walking funny. His other symptoms are that he mopes around hanging his head low to the ground, doesn't eat or drink much & sometimes won't even take a treat. They've gone through somewhere in the ballpark of $1000.00 worth of tests and can find no definite cause. I'm not sure what testing has been done specifically, but I can definitely find out. His normal personality is basically that of a spaz. In fact, she refers to him as her "Spaz Rocket".
Any ideas based on stuff ya'll have been through with your dogs? Any feedback would be mucho appreciated!

Doxys are well known for back issues. Perhaps they can't find anything on an xray but would need something like an MRI.

I'd suggest maybe they take the dog to a different Vet...maybe one that does Acupuncture and Chiropractic (a Holistic Vet...who also is a traditional Vet), and see if they can help.

I think more info about what tests have been done may be helpful.

Like Donna, my first thought was back problems, or his neck from the way you describe him holding his head low. Either a slipped disc, or possibly a tumour putting pressure...

How old? How long has this been happening? Did it come on suddenly, or over a period of months? Does he respond to pain meds?

As the owner of 4 dachshunds (one of whom was paralyzed twice and had surgery to fix him) it sounds like the back or neck. The test to properly find the problem is more than $1000 so I suspect she is seeing her regular vet. She needs to take him to a neurologist. Back when my dachshund had problems they did myelograms (sp?) that was about $1500 now they have better tests, I can't remember what they use, maybe a CT scan or MRI, I just can't remember.
The best thing right now is strict crate rest. That is always the first step. 6 weeks in a small crate NEVER being let out even for a second except to be carried to potty on a leash and then carried back in to the crate. This is extremely hard because 6 weeks seems like an eternity, but it is the best way to try to save them from having surgery and healing. If he herniated a disk I have been told by restricting the movement you are helping the "goo" inside the disk to not leak out more and damaged the cord.
Please tell her to go to Dodger's List. They are very helpful and extremely knowledgeable. She can tell them the symptoms and they will give her advice on the next step trying to avoid surgery.

Thanks for the feedback friends. I will pass this on to Jenny. She's very worried.
Sandra, she said they have done x-rays, radiographs & various blood tests.
