Can anyone recommend a puppy kindergarten/training program in the Long Island, New York area?

You can go to APDT and try searching by zip code.
That is an excellent place to go. I'm with APDT, and they offer one of the best trainer locater services I've seen. It is very comprehensive, easy to use, and offers you choices of local trainers that you might not otherwise get to know. You'll also notice that no trainer from PetSmart is a member

I don't like APDT, my opinion because you have to pay about 150.00 to become a member and be listed so that may be why no pet smart people are listed! But anyone with the extra money can pay to be there without a big check up on credentials. I would try clicker trainers, positive based training, easy to do and no trainer's fees that I am aware of. If you want to try clicker training yourself it's easy enough to do and Newfs respond well to this if they are food motivated. I always recommend several training's a day in shorter successions rather than one long hour training because you seem more consistent in what you expect from the dog and the dog is less frustrated in shorter sessions leaving him/her to end it on a successful note.

On the APDT trainer search page, you can limit your search to professional members who are credentialed and certified. Just click the appropriate box or use the advanced search function to narrow your search. At the $150.00 professional level, a trainer must prove certification to become a member. Members at the $100.00 level may be waiting to test for their certification. You can always ask.

Here is the list of certifying bodies and the abbreviations they use along with an explanation. There is a wealth of information on other pages, also.

There are APDT members (at least in my area) who teach at Pet Smart. They may not note that in their listing. Pet Smart has their own accreditation program. APDT requires an independent organization to assess skills and knowledge. Some trainers have several credentials.

There are clicker trainers who are APDT members. However, you asked for kindergarten classes not a training method, so I assume you are primarily looking for socialization, as well as basic manners. APDT promotes science based, positive reinforcement training in a variety of settings and methods.

As with anyone you hire, certified or not, you should go watch a class and/or interview the trainer and/or students before signing up.

Thank you! That info is very helpful.

Enzo is 12 weeks old and we want him a puppy class with puppies around the same age, as mentioned, to start socializing him as soon as possible.

Also, basic manners. Becoming accustomed to walking on a leash, leave it, drop it, coming when called, etc. Not mention curbing the nipping and jumping.
