Just got a scary call from my husband. My mother in-law had some minor surgery today and evidentaly is experiencing some sort of heart problem and is not coming out of the anesthesia. I don't know what we would do if we lost her. This was supposed to an in and out type of surgery and we weren't expecting any complications. My father in law is all torn up about it. My husband is on his way to the hospital to be there for him. I'm praying this turns out to be no big deal. Please let her be ok!

Keep em coming!! I know it's helping. She's going to be transfered from recovery to the ICU. She has a breathing tube and they say there's fluid in her lungs. They're still running tests to try and find out what went wrong. I hope she can recover and be home soon. I'm really worried about my poor husband. He's the only reliable son they have so there's a lot of weight on his shoulders.

It if helps, I started my nursing career in the OR, and it sounds like an abnormal reaction to the paralytic (they use 2 drugs in surgery, one paralyzes you, the other makes you sleep) some people take a really long time to metabolize the paralytic (like days to weeks sometimes) and to be kind, they keep you asleep with the other drug until you regain some movement (you wouldn't want to be under the paralytic and awake ..) the fluid can happen with any intubation procedure, and usually clears up once she wakes up and can start coughing ... but usually these people who have trouble metabolizing the paralytic can be okay with time, just make sure she notes the exact meds they used, so that she can tell doctors not to use them in the future.

Jen, I had been hoping it was something along those lines too but now they're saying she experienced heart failure. Not knowing exactly what's wrong and how they're going to fix it is really horrible. I'm stuck here at home with the kids and keep getting these vague updates from my husband. I wish I could be there.

Thank you so much for all of your kind thoughts and prayers! She is doing much better. They took her breathing tube out this morning and I actually got to speak with her a little bit on the phone. Her spirits are really good. They still don't know what went wrong so she can't come home yet. Hopefully she'll be released in a few days though. We really would like to have her well and at home for Christmas. We will really be counting our blessings this holiday.

Thank you so much everyone. I'm not a very religious person but I do have beliefs and I know the power of prayer is no myth. Goodness knows the kids and I were praying awfully hard all night.

I'm so sorry you have this worry just before the holidays. Just saw the thread, so I'm glad to know she's recovering. It does sound like a reaction to the anesthesia. Sending good thoughts your way.
