Poor Cheery-eyed moose

Seems like poor moose has a cherry eye on the left :( I've looked through previous NN posts and it looks identical to the other pictures. It popped up last night, then had gone when i checked on him in the night, but had come back in full force by early morning and has stayed put.

I've booked him in to the vets first thing tomorrow morning to get it checked out and see what options are available. From research and speaking to our Breeder, it seems that the tuck-in procedure could be the option to push for a first try.

He's barely 4 months old- could this be too young to have the surgery done- especially if its under a general?

Would love to hear from other NN's whose Newfs have had this procedure done and what the recovery period is like/entails.

Thanks!

Bear had a cherry eye surgery...I think he was 7 or 8 months old. It was a pretty easy surgery and recovery. But then again, he just had 2 TPLO surgeries in the last 4 months....so anything else seems easy LOL

We haven't dealt with cherry eye but Black is 9 and a half years old and he just had a small tumour removed from inside his lower eyelid. It was a reasonable size- about 12 mm by 6 mm and his recovery has been totally smooth. Within 3 or 4 days you would never know he had it done. I hope everything goes as smoothly for you! :)

I had one male with Cherry eye, the vet did the tuck in procedure. He was about 5-6 mths old and did just fine, no problems.
Good luck and update us when you have seen the vet.

I don't know anything about cherry eye, but I did a quick google to see what they looked like. I found a video of someone massaging the cherry eye back inside. Is this a reasonable "treatment"? He did it on a bulldog, so maybe it's a breed specific thing, and he didn't say how long it lasted. I'm guessing it's not really a reasonable treatment unless the cherry eye doesn't pop back out.

Max had both eyes tucked at about a year. One held, one didn't so had that one removed and so far no dry eye.

If you catch it very early- first day or so- you can do anti-inflammatory drops and manually put the gland back under the third eyelid - then keep him quiet and be religious about the anti-inflammatory drops for a week or so.

We had a youngster with cherry eye and we used drops and massage to get over the condition.......Jessie had no further issues. We also had Tobias our Rescue and i got his reduced with drops and massage, because he was too unwell for surgery. I think each case is an individual.....Hope it goes well :) Ronnie

Thanks all for posting your experiences!

We had the vet visit on Saturday morning. He tried massaging it back in with no luck and booked Moose in for this morning to have the tuck procedure done. He gave us some anti inflammatory and anti septic drops to contine trying the massage over the weekend- but it didn't budge it so Moose is in there now having the surgery done.

Poor little guy- i know its just a simple procedure but i can't help worrying about him going under a general.
We're allowed to pick him up in about 5 hours so i'm hoping the day goes quick.

Will post again when he's back home!
