Pet Insurance

I have narrowed it down to Embrace and PetPLan. would welcome any insight from you guys about what insurance to go with. Atlas is 11 1/2 weeks old - and its time to get moving with this....but I have been procrastinating because (just like human health insurance) it is nonsensical to me. Thanks

I have Embrace and it paid 90% of Jakes poisoning bills. He had emergency overnight care and day care plus all sorts of tests and meds. I LOVED how easy it is to file claims and they were very quick on paying. No hassles whatsoever. I, like you, hate insurance but with newfies, I think it is worthwhile to have.

I can't help you with the choices as they are U.S. However, sign up for one or other asap because if something happens to Atlas soon you may not get coverage for that incident!

With Embrace you have to get the vet to certify that orthopedically he doesn't have any issues. Once that is done, everything will be covered, you don't have a waiting period.

We have PetPlan. It's worked really well for us. They pay claims really quickly, which is nice, and filing claims is easy. You can also track the status online easily. They've been really easy to work with and answer questions when I called.

I've heard people recommend both Embrace & PetPlan here. I don't think you can go wrong. I chose PetPlan because 2 of my neighbors have it and have been very pleased.

Good luck!

Stay AWAY from 24PetWatch. I had insurance on my dog for 7.5 years and when I finally submitted one claim for a $1500 emergency surgery, they denied it. You have to read all the fine print of your policy which is usually not available until you have already signed up for it. I wish I would've put that money into a savings account instead.

WE have embrace. IF you don't get the vet to clear him then you have a 6 month waiting time. They pay out pretty high, so that is why we went with them. Not had to use them yet, so no help there.

Compare the deductibles with the plans. Some have a yearly deductible and some are per incident which can really affect your payout.

I've heard that both Embrace and Pet Plan are very good. I have Embrace. Get it when the pup gets home, full coverage $10K a year, no Rx, no dental, no maintenance stuff. Then once they get their clearances for hips, heart, elbows, patellas, thyroid, eyes, at around 2 yrs, we switch to accident only (which covers cruciates and bloat). BUT that's because we have so many. If I had one, I'd probably keep the full coverage. Never have had to use it yet. Knock on wood.

Don't procrastinate. All it takes is to find an elbow or hip or some other "surgical" problem at 20 weeks and you cannot get the coverage. Then you'll kick yourself.

Hope it doesn't happen...but it has to far too many. Be prepared say the Boy Scouts! ;-)

Yeah and watch out for this - if for any reason your pup is seen in those 6 months for something, like, a sore paw that turns out to be a muscle strain, then a year later needs TPLO on the same leg, you may have a problem. Or at least a fight. Just have the vet fill out the form and date it ASAP.

They have been good, IME, except for some silly things like above. The claim that had me burning was when Cooper had prostatitis, one of his symptoms was straining to poop, with almost nothing coming out. The emergency room vet injected him with some fluids. The insurance company said that this was a gastro incident and he had been treated for gastro incidents before he had insurance so declined that whole ER visit. Even though,, the next day he was admitted to the hospital with prostatitis. They DID cover that, though, including 2 nights in hospital, ultrasound of his abdomen, IV fluids/antibiotics. etc.

And if I can recommend - GET the prescription medicine coverage. Cooper's prostatitis antibiotics were $900 (not a typo) and Zuzu's Metacam runs me $190 every 2 months. I declined the coverage when I signed up - Doh.

On average this year it has taken them 4-6 weeks to process my claims. But by now they totally hate me so...lol.

I'm so glad you asked about this, our household is just gearing up to talk about pet insurance! I just looked at Embrace and PetPlan, and PetPlan seems to make the most sense for us, even though the deductible is per-condition, as opposed to per-year. Do you guys think the two will make a huge difference? I noticed that they make sure to say they only cover dogs for life if they have been insured continuously, with no breaks, which for some reason makes me hesitate. Good thing I have plenty of time to research! Hey, Linzi00, let us know what you decide, and how it goes for you. :)

Ok..a question of my own that I've been a little confused on. You have to pay for everything upfront, right? Then you file a claim and they pay you back? I'm just thinking like wow if something happens out of the blue that cost thousands of dollars how would we pay last min.

Yep. We keep a credit card for things like this. Have used care credit in the past but that is a story for it's own b*tch thread.

We have PetPlan on both newfs which we bought as soon as they came home from their breeder. Never had a problem, they pay quickly, and it's already paid for itself just with Liz's injury. Wish I had it on my basenji, but too late now.
