Hello there,
I have an almost 8 yr old newfy boy Baloo that is taking prevacoix for arithritis, hip displasia pain. My question is does anyone know how long of pain relief this gives in a day. For ex. is it 4 hrs or 8 hrs? Baloo is on 227 mg tabs and takes a tab and half each day. I think he experiences pain in the later part of the day and was wondering if anyone had any experience with ultram/tramadol as in addition or by itself to control pain as it can be given every 4-6 hours. Any thoughts would be appreciated:D

My vet recommends tramadol with previcox when the Nsaid is not enough for pain relief. I can give my Samantha 1 previcox per day and 2 tramadol every 8-12 hours.

Sad part is, I cannot give Samantha the tramadol because when I do she tends to poop a lot with some very loose stool. My vet said that is one of the side effects of tamadol. So she just takes the previcox, which I like better than derramaxx. She eats better taking the prevaicox and seems more peppy. BTW this Saturday my girl will be 13 years and 3 months!

edited to add: The tramadol is 50mg and the previcox is 227 mg. You should check with your vet for the correct amount to give your dog. My Samantha is about 110 lbs

Sorry to hear Baloo is having pain. I haven't used Previcox before, but have given Tramadol for a long time. It has worked well for us. Chance took it along with Metacam and Sydney now gets it also. She takes 1 1/2 50 mg twice a day. If she has a bad day I add Metacam.

My girl, Nellie, takes Tramadol for cancer pain. Unfortunately, she can't have any nsaids because it mitigates the effects of her cancer med. Right now, she is getting 6 (50mg) a day (2 pills 3xdaily) and seems to be feeling comfortable.

So sorry about Baloo's pain!

thanks you guys:D

It's nice to hear that some newfy folks have had some luck with the ultram. I myself take it for degenerative disk disease, arthritis, pain from unsucessful back surgeries--I can't have NSAIDS because I am also a transplant patient---Anyway it works amazing for me, it means the difference between being on the couch and be able to participate in life. Baloo's vet is pretty open minded so I am going to talk to him about the research I did and the example you all have given.

Jeannie:Oh Happy Dancing for you and your special girl, I can't believe she is that old!! Amazing, each day is such a blessing with these creatures:D Baloo is a big male and weighs between 145-150 depending on the time of year. We have not had any problems so far with the prevacox-- it used be a PRN med but now he really does need it every day, and I think he is still sore. He talks alot when he settles down of the floor almost like an old man would grumble about rheumatism. If I didn't think he was it pain I would laugh because it does sound like a person "bitchin" The other thing is he has a bedtime routine that he comes to the edge of our bed and "asks" to come up and we tell him "come on up big boy." He usually does no problem and we have a tall bed. He stays snugged up there with us while we love on him for about 20-30 mins and then goes down on his bed. The last week here he has wanted to so badly that he put his head on the bed and whines then backs up to jump a couple of times--then barks at me like I should be able to fix it;D after a lot of barking and coaxing, hymning and hawing he finally jumps up but is having trouble clearling and you can tell it was a feat for him! My husband is working on shortening our bed frame tomorrow so that should help, but I still think he is in pain.

Garden girl--so sorry your Nellie has cancer:( It seems like everywhere I read, here, facebook someones pupper has cancer--IT STINKS!! Hope they can do some research that makes some headway for dogs! I'm so glad to hear that the ultram works for your special girl:D

Thanks Everyone else, I hope you have continued success with ultram and metacam for your newfies.

I was given ultram/tramadol for Poppy after her spay/gastropexy. It worked well, but I found the pain relief was not very long lasting for the first few days. The vet said 2-3 pills (50 mg) up to 3 times a day...at first I tried 3 at a time, but it made her too doped up, it was scary. It made her anxious and she just stood at the wall. So I started giving her 2, and then another one a couple of hours later, sort of staggering the dose to keep a level of med in her bloodstream at all times. That worked much better, and made her more like herself. I would recommend ultram/tramadol. It definitely gave her pain relief during the few days we used it.

My girl Gracie is on Metacam and Tramadol. She gets tramadol twice per day, I give her one pill with breakfast and dinner. She can have more, and I give her more if she needs it. I think tramadol is a great pain reliever in addition to her Metacam... She is 13 btw.

Michelle, I'm so sorry about Baloo! Our Maple (who is almost 11) has been on gabapentin, a human neural blocker, for almost two years for her severe arthritis. It apparently blocks the pain sensors from getting to her brain, and you can get the prescription really cheap if you but walgreens' or walmart's prescription plan. She gets two 100mg gabapentin caplets every morning along with one 100 mg Rimadyl, One Arthrisoothe glocosamine, and two fish oil caplets. While the gapapentin has exacerbated her PICA, I'll take her eating every cardboard box in site and pooping multicolor every day just see her walk relatively pain free!

Hi Michelle!! Sorry to hear Baloo's pain is getting worse. :( Ebony was on tramadol after the surgery to remove her mast cell tumor and she has a current script for it to help with a limp that has developed (most likely due to her cancer).
Give that boy a big hug from here! I really need to visit again! I miss you guys!

It's good to know that there are alternatives out there:D It sounds like it really could be an option for him. From what I have read it is not near as hard on their livers and kidneys as other pain relievers, so that is an added extra benefit too.

Elizabeth: My heart just leaps when I hear that someones newfie is 10> but you and Jeannies wow 13;13 3mos--incredible. Thank you for sharing that!

Becky: I'm so glad sweet Ebony is not in pain! It breaks my heart to think about her limping-I would give anything to make it better for you two! I'm thinking the ultram might allow me to groom him a little more throughly too as he acts like I'm killing him when I do. He looks a little grinchish through the paws and his pantaloons are well not resembling newfy pants;D (This was another tip he was in more pain--especially when I try to do his hind quarters.)
We MISS YOU GUYS TOO! would love to see you sometime soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and Miss EB--((Hugs))

Matilda takes Metacam once a day, gabapentin (for nerve pain) twice a day and tramadol twice a day, but can have it up to 4 times a day if she needs it. Matilda is an orthopedic mess (hips, hocks, spine, ribs, etc all deformed) and this combo has worked for her for a couple of years.
