Orka Goes To Zoo

1st time to zoo. Get used to the smells and sights of wild animals in a controlled environment. Part of ongoing socialization so someday Orka will do a down stay with other dogs out in a wilderness park.

Enrolled in 1 year membership today so this will be a continual ongoing training.

Went to playground to brush / rake for grooming, then to confluence of Willamette and Clackamas Rivers so Orka could run around, swim, and get his zoomies, marking and pottying done.

Then on to lunch at the zoo, then a tour of the animals with an escort, then a train ride around the zoo.

We went with the wonderful photographer Joanna Meleiro who likes getting a full-on Newfie dose with Orka as she waits for her own Newf puppy. Joanna is really busy so the majority of the pix will come in a couple weeks, but we have a few today to memorialize this crazy adventure.

Photo credits all to Joanna Meleiro!

Tomorrow he is going skijoring. He is madly in love with huskies and a beautiful girl husky and lovely woman are going to run him hitched to bungees in the snow, woman on skis. Then Sunday he is going kayaking with me at a paddlefest where the lake will be full of canoes, kayaks and stand up paddle boards. We will demo hybrids in search of a huge boat. Of course he will swim and we'll go on a 5 mile off leash walk to Columbia River beaches afterward.

We've been running into more and more wildlife as we get further out into the boonies. He senses wildlife, gets very excited, can smell them, feel them, hear see and something else we humans no longer utilize. He went through a long period of not chasing anything but lately he has really gotten a wild streak flushing out skunks, raccoons, deer, coyotes, and owls. He bays bugles yodels howls barks and goes hog wild running like a maniac. We are going to come across bears and mountain lions and he needs to learn what they are and to avoid them. Thus this training.

Sorry I haven't been posting much. Been really sick with pain in the arsky autism complications, and on days I'm OK, we cram in as many activities as possible. The rivers here are still flooding, now with copious ice melt, but soon we'll be back to water training. We're having a lot of fun.

That's fantastic! I just love that you and Orka can do things like this, especially given all the other stories about him - he's such a character!

Although now Maggie is jealous and wants to go to the zoo too....Maybe we can organize a newf day at the zoo? :kgo_027:

Love your photos! And what a cool idea to go to the zoo! And one of these days I'm going to PM you about your kayaking with newf. I LOVE kayaking, though I sea kayak and wouldn't be able to fit a newf in there, nor would I take her on the ocean, but a rec boat on calm waters, or maybe a canoe? ...:)

Great photos! I love Orka's expressions. You can see the tenderness and trust between the both of you, especially in the polar bear shot. What magical memories :)

I will strive to give my dogs more of an Orka kinda' life, but I think I'd poop out before we reached that goal.
