Opinions requested about posting photos of other people's dogs

Is it considered discourteous to post pictures of other people's dogs without asking for permission? I wouldn't dream of posting pictures of people's children without asking permission, but I wasn't sure it would be the same for dogs.

If we had a play visit and then photos were posted that were taken by someone else, I would be flattered that they did. If it was something embarrassing or some such thing, I would prefer the courtesy of a "Hey this is funny, I want to post it," so at least I knew it was coming.

I would think it would depend on the situation.

I believe this or a similar question came up last year.

If you took the photo, and had permission to do so, the photo belongs to you and you can use it nearly anyway you like. If someone else took the photo, you must ask permission from the photographer to use it and you should post a credit for their work. Photos are always the property of the photographer, not the dog's owner unless that right has been transferred.

Now, I figure you're probably talking about posting candid pics here on NN and most members wouldn't mind. But be careful about posting other photographer's photos of people's dog here or elsewhere. It all has to do with legal copyrights.

The easiest way around all that is to just get permission, in writing, from the photographer first . Many will be pleased to have their work shown if they get the credit for it. Others may want to control how the photo is used. For example, I have agreed to allow certain photos of my dogs to be used exclusively in commercial advertising for dog toys or for published articles. Once I do that, those photos cannot be used commercially elsewhere so I need to maintain control of where those photos are published. Some photographers may also digitally and invisibly watermark their photos which allows their usage to be tracked.

And, as mentioned above, it would be nice to have a heads up if the photo is likely to be embarrassing.

It depends on the situation among other things. Also why are you posting it? If it is for profit then there is a whole different set of rules.

After the get togethers up at Jeannie's nobody thought twice about posting pictures of people, dogs, whatever was going on. It was a somewhat public event for a specific group of people (NN) with others who couldn't come wanting to see what they missed.

If you're at my house taking a picture of your dog posing by my fireplace, I might have a problem if, in the background, you managed to catch the piles of $100 bills that I use for fire starters.

Generally I would say that if you're in a situation with the expectation of privacy then check first. If you're out in public, legally you're probably in the clear (no expectation of privacy) but if you know the person, it would probably be polite to ask & explain why.

Sorry Greg but Monopoly money doesn't count. :uglyhammer:

Thank you for the replies. I was referring to candid photos I took at the dog show yesterday. In some cases I asked for permission to take the photo, in some cases I did not -- particularly if there was a wide shot of a lot of dogs the dog's owner/handler would not even know the dog was being photographed.

Even when I asked for permission to take a photo, I did not say how it might be used, but that situation would probably fall under the comment Jane made about the photo belonging to the photographer.

Some folks are a lot more open about what appears on the internet whereas others are much more careful. I am careful to crop out "unnecessary info" when I post pictures. No need for the world to know my housekeeping abilities or lack thereof. Or as Greg implied, including pictures of stacks of cash might get attention from the wrong sorts of folks. Some people will not under any circumstances post pictures of their children.

Legalities aside, I was just wondering how some of you folks who show your dogs would feel if a photo of your dog was posted on the internet without your permission, even if you felt it was a flattering picture. I would be especially interested if there are some of you out there who would NOT like that.

I guess, in a public venue, with photos being snapped all over the place, it would be hard to make sure that each person/animal's owner has given permission for the photo to be "published"......either on the net or otherwise. I think photos taken at shows, events, etc. are fine to share with others.

However, I'd think if it's going to be published in an article....or some print format....or used for commercial purposes, as a common courtesy, the subject should give authorization for that photo to be used.

Then again.......look at the paparazzi and celebrities. If the subject is in public.......any photo is fine to reprint in any way, without authorization or consent.

I always ask if its ok when I'm taking pictures around the dog park if other peoples dogs are involved. I really wouldnt care if someone was taking Wash's picture and doing whatever with it.

This is an interesting question.... I posted on my personal site, some pictures of Angus many, many years ago. For some reason, a few years later, I went cruising the web to look for newfoundland dog pictures... Low and behold.. there was the picture on someone else's web site of my Angus... I was not surprised, but it pointed out that anyone can do anything with pictures that are "out there".

Makes me think twice before I post anywhere, and not just from a copyright perspective.
