Oh Dear...mats

Cimorene is very matted on her groin area. She was recently in heat for 4 weeks. She bled quite a bit and wore boxer briefs the entire time. I have to say, I guess I missed the matting starting when I bathed her after it was all over. I was brushing her out today and YIKES. I'm a bit horrified and realize I have been avoiding that area since her heat.

How do I find a good groomer?? She's never been...we bathe, brush, clip her nails ourselves. I'll ask her dog trainer for recommendations I suppose.

Can you just clip them out for now? Lot's of people keep the groin, poop chute and belly area short. Or is this her pantaloons? If it's between her legs, you could still clip out the mats and it won't show too bad. Just be careful with the scissors and don't cut across the mat. Cut in the direction that the fur grows and away from her skin. Several slice through the mat should loosen it enough to come out without loosing length.

You can use thinning shears on them to get them out.

Depending on how bad they are .. ice on ice works well to get some out... or bathing her and putting hot oil treatment can help to get some out. Work on them a little at a time as per not to make her too sore/irritated.

In the groin, I just cut them out. Then...Ice on Ice the rest of her feathers...and especially after a bath!

Not a Newf, but my male cat is a Ragdoll, and his fur is long and soft like a rabbits and tends to mat very easily. Especially around his..um, rump area. We like to call them his fluffy pants. I found an especially bad one there, and just started trimming it with scissors. Once I got half way through it, it just kind of worked itself out.

He's going to get a buzz cut on his butt as soon as the roads are passable.

Thanks everyone. We'll see if I can do it myself... I do have lots of experience with mats, having persian cats, so I know how, I just don't know if I'll be able to. Cimorene is still quite a handful and short of having a couple of people hold her down while I do it...and spending MANY days on it. I think it might just need to be shaved down there. It's all along her privates...

get someone to hold really yummy treats in front of her when cutting the mats out, make her work to get the treat though so it keeps her concentrated on that instead of you

Maggie is a handful to brush, she acts like I am weilding the brush of death and kicks and bites the whole time. She also tries to squish me.

I gave her a treat, said stay.....and my tasmanian devil turned back into my sweet puppy. Bribery is never bad as long as you control it!! ( and this includes kids!) :uglyhammer:
