North Jersey Vet Recommendations?

I'm at my wits' end with the vets I've seen, one who tried to convince me to neuter Orca at 6 months and argued bitterly that my breeder was a piece of crap (because all breeders are), and another who failed to diagnose Orca's Lyme until WE suggested the test, gave him an insufficient prescription for Doxy (21 days, and the limp came right back when he was done, had to beg for 9 more days, and we're out tomorrow). He's convinced Orca has hip dysplasia, because he's a giant breed dog, without any x-rays and a positive lyme test. When I called for another Doxy prescription he said, what kind of dog do you have, a Newf? Yeah, it's probably hip dysplasia. You know, those large dogs get it... Idiot.

So I need a new vet, and have no idea where to go. Anyone in North or Central Jersey have a vet who's not an imbecile?

Are you around Red Bank? I know a long time member here loves her vet there. I am clueless with locations, sorry. I think Jess ( Millies Mom ) is North Jersey-ish too.

And your vet IS an idiot. Is he an actual vet??

I wish I were close to Red Bank! There's a holistic vet a few towns away I might try but I really don't know about the "holistic" part... I keep hoping to see someone with a newf around (we've seen a few while driving around town) so I can ask them, but if haven't seen one since I started looking for them.

Yes, he is an idiot. Terrifying that people are supposed to trust him as an authority.

Orca is lucky he has an owner with the knowledge to know when a vet is not following the proper protocol for limping. Lyme must be ruled out first. When my dog was positive I demanded extra Doxy as the joints are the most difficult place for treatment to reach due to little to no blood supply. He gave me a script for 3 extra months. Of course we didn't use all that, but he agreed a bit over the recommended would be better if tolerated due to the joint issue. If Red Bank is too far, have confidence in your ability to recognize a good vet even with recommendations.

Good idea, Anne!

Also, is Millie's Mom Jess near you? I have a few Newfie friends on FB I can put feelers out to as well. Are you on FB?

I sent a PM to Jess, she hasn't been posting frequently lately so I wouldn't be surprised if she doesn't see it for a while. :) And posting on NewPenDel FB now. Yes, Dawn, I'm on facebook. I've had one since 2005!

Yes, it's not far! I would very much appreciate your doing that, Lynn. By the way, I convinced the old vet to give me another month's worth of the Doxy. :)
