We had a busy day today and went out for a bit this morning, came home and finished packing up stuff to go camping. Had the dogs stuff packed, I took Sophie and Vino our IG out for pee/poop breaks about an hour before we actually left. If we try to get them to go RIGHT as we're leaving, it's usually unsuccessful. Sophie pooped/peed and Vino did not. Right before leaving, I packed Sophie into the SUV and hubs had Bava and Vino - they did their stuff and he got them in the SUV and we were off.
I scooped Vino from the back into the front seat with me which is his normal spot as he's an IG and quite portable. About a mile from the house, I felt him go limp and looked down. I said to hubby, Oh mygosh, I think Vino just died. Why the hell I said that I don't know and it felt weird to say that. Hubs said did he pass out from excitement at going? I rubbed his ribs and gave him a little shake to snap him out of whatever it was and his head lolled back on my chest and his tongue came out. His pupils were dilated. He let out a scream and I kept rubbing his sides and talking to him as calmly as I could. I saw his tongue was turning blue and just felt absolutely lost.
We got stopped off the road and got out and laid him on the ground and performed CPR - both of us but he was gone.
He was just....gone.
We turned around and went home and got him cleaned up as he'd lost his bowels and bladder in the process of leaving us and let Sophie sniff him. Sophie was his "mamma" and was VERY upset. We covered him up in a towel and a blankie and at some point, hubby called the vet to find out what we needed to do to preserve his body for a necropsy because we were desperate to know what the hell happened. This was so damn sudden. He'd just turned two on January 20. He was the epitome of health, running, jumping, playing, eating fine, pooping/peeing fine, no bumps/bruises, pain or anything. Just a happy healthy little guy. He kept the other pups on their toes, literally.
The vet called back moment later - this happened around 4:05? or so in the afternoon.
He said we're headed home, bring him in, we'll meet you there. So we took his poor little body on my lap to the vet for one final ride. Talked to him about what happened. He felt it was his heart which we did too. He said he'd perform the autopsy after we left and call us when he found out something.
He called about an hour later and said it was his heart. Something having to do with left ventricle cardiomyopathy? So, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy...rare in small dogs. Said that that part of his heart had thickened and he just died.... No other complications inside his body. He's sending off part of the heart and part of his left lung to a facility out of state and we're having his body cremated and sent to us to have here.
Please everyone hug your babies...
