ok we have started KY and Dunc on PHD which looks like a great kibble....they get that in the morning and raw in the evening....the raw their are getting is forzen hamburger from BJ's with a high fat contant...the good news is that Duncan has gained 13 Lbs he was at 101 and is now at 114 a much better weight for him...the bad news is that they have very runny stools...looks mucusy (?)....am wondering if there is too much fat or if thy can't tolerate the new food...I posted before with what was in the new kibble...any ideas?

Could be too high of a fat content. Also, probiotics do help with the firming of stools. Get the highest CFUs in the probiotics and keep the powder or pills refrigerated.

Keep us posted.

PS. Are you feeding raw veggies? If so, remember the below ground veggies are stool firming and the above ground are stool loosening. That's why it's good to use both.

Interesting about the above ground / below ground veggies, Sue!

Glad to hear Duncan has gained some weight with his new diet. Good work Shelley! I think it is just a matter of fine tuning the diet until you get it perfect. Experimenting around a bit should get you there.

Just an FYI... Often a mucousy stool is an indication of overfeeding... Maybe lower the amount fed by a 1/4 of a lb and see if it helps...

A quick change of foods can cause an irritates digestive system which will also cause mucuosy poop. so can too high a fat content if their system is not used to it. That is definitely sign of something is not right or not agreeing with their systems.

How long has this been going on, if more the 2or 3 days I would be very concerned that something is wrong.

the stools have been loose since...we started on PHD and the fattier hamburger...this is about a month...but duncan has also gained 13 lbs which he was having trouble doing before....I think it might be the fat content and I am adding root veggies and rice...we will see if that doesn't work it may be the kibble....Duncan has just had a stool sample which came out normal.

My guess would be it's the fat in the food, causing the mucous.

Be very careful of too much fat in a dog's diet. That's what causes Pancreatitis, and if they get it, it's terrible for them, plus very costly for you, as they stay at the Vet for about 3-4 days on an IV. Then they have to eat very LOW fat foods, perhaps for life.

Mucous is one sign of Irritable Bowel Disease (or syndrome), as is diarrhea. This can also be caused by a reaction to the food.

Perhaps you could switch to a leaner meat, like turkey or chicken, or even lamb. I know some who feed Ostrich (the other red meat, LOL). Oh, and don't forget fish.

How much fat does the kibble have? And are they also getting fat in treats, etc?

If you find that by cutting back the fatty meat and the amount of food given, the mucous is STILL there, then I'd suspect the kibble itself has caused the problem, since it only appeared after the switch to that food.
