My heart is pounding! I received an email from our QMA president where I am the track photographer and they need somebody to do the pictures for tonight's big car races. I have no problems getting the pictures during the day but when the sun goes down it is a different story. The hubby has been so busy at work we were not even able to take my kid racing this weekend in GA so I have not had time to get a new faster lens.
I think manual ISO starting at 800 when the sun starts going down. What do you think? Ugh wish I would've had more notice but I will take whatever right now to support my hobby.

That must be a relief. (I would be relieved, at least!) Whew! Guess it's time for a lot of night racing practice shooting. How cool is it that they called you, though! :kgo_027:

Depends on the camera. Some are great with high ISO.... some not so much. A lens like my 85 mm 1.2 is very forgiving in low light but the only thing in focus might be a corner or the bumper, depending on where your are at, so be careful. You have to watch the shutter speed too unless you are going for the blurred effect. It's possible you would shoot at f2.8 - 4.0 with shutter at 200-400 and ISO at 1000-6400. It all depends on the ambient light. Here is an example and other answers that might help:

Thanks, I have done some shooting at night races but it was for my fun and not somebody else so if they were not perfect it was no big deal and I didn't have to worry about missing something.
I was SO relieved that they found another person to do it because it would have drained me with my shoulder still not being well. I looked at their schedule and I could not fit in all of the races since I already committed and refuse to miss my son's races for any amount of money. I still would have liked to been able to help Bobby and Stephanie Hamilton out since they let our racing club use the new track that they purchased for our kids to race at but no biggie either way. Thanks for your support.

You could try 'panning' that is where you move the camera with the moving subject while the shutter is open. The subject is in focus while everything else is really blurred.

If I were you and had the time, I would still go there just to practice (and see what settings work best for the camera), sort of preparing for the next time when you'll be called out :).

I like the panning and I think that my lens has a setting for that too. I actually found out the first time I tried shooting the kids racing at night that the manual focus was faster than the auto. I will try to practice some asap. Of course I still have to get a faster lens too.

That is a really cool shot! I love how the kids are in focus and the rest isn't and it shows the motion too. I've tried to do that during the day races but have not have much luck.

Thank you. It's just one of those things sometimes you get it and sometimes you just get blur especially the speed he's going.Lucky me.That time.LOL

Wayne, when I was a kid I saw Big Daddy Don Garland drag race. Talk about a deafening sound! It was super cool.

BTW, that's a great capture. Luck in photogography? C'mon, you the man! LOL
