Need Help Selecting Puppy Food

My 9 week old puppy is currently eating Royal Canin Maxi puppy food. This is what the breeder was feeding her. After doing some research, I learned that while Royal Canin is an above-average food, there are much better choices out there. I have narrowed my selection down to two different large breed puppy foods; Holistic Select and Chicken Soup. They both appear to be very high quality foods, and are around the same price range.

Does anyone have experience with either of these foods? Any reason why I should choose one over the other? Below is a link to each foods nutrtional information.

Links:
Holistic Select
Chicken Soup

Thank you,
Max

I can't comment on the specific food, but you'll get lots of good suggestions here. Try the search function and you will get tons of information as well. You should also check with your breeder before switching - does your contract state that a specific food or type of food be fed? If you don't like the Royal Canin, your breeder may have other suggestions of what her pups typically do well on. Good luck!

Congratulations on your beautiful puppy. Sorry, I don't have experience with either of those foods. I have learned alot from NN about biologically and species appropriate food. Our breeder fed Taste of the Wild. We moved her to Large Puppy from Orijen and have since transitioned to Orijen Six 6 Fish Adult kibble and we are really happy with this kibble.

My breeder had us feed our puppy large breed ADULT formula. This will allow for SLOW growth and bone formation. The vet did not agree. I am sure there is a lot of info here about dog food. Mine is almost 2 and we feed Taste of the wild pacific stream formula.

Whatever you select should be adult food or at least a food with low calcium/phosphorus levels of about 1%. Learn to read the labels and compare.

Look at dog food analysis website for more info.l'm sorry l don't know what your budget is but go for the one you can afford with the best ingredients.

Remember not all dogs do well on some foods but l would go for an adult food .

Also have you got good insurance on her as l know some of the insurances have longer waiting times if something happens .

We currently have an 8 month old Newfy that we have been feeding 75% Eagle pack with 25% blue buffalo and it seems to be doing really well for him. Shinny coat, normal stool and bright eyes. Not to harsh on the wallet either.

We fed Cooper a holistic select food for a couple of years with no ill effects. I'm not familiar with the other food.

When Zuzu was a puppy (we got Cooper as a young adult), we fed her the Kirkland Select Chicken, which was a good food and easy on the wallet. IIRC it did have a recall last year though, after we had switched to something else....

The salmon, anchovy and sardine formula is NOT recommended for puppies, the Calcium/Phosphorus ratio is not good for them. Nicholas is living proof :)
