We just got a leather set and so far everyone loves it. (Including the fur kids) Before that we had a fabric couch set that was 6 years old. Wore well, no tears but looked well used.

Sorry, for me there are no other options. Leather keeps the dirt off, the dust off, the dog smell off, the fur off, and is EASY. Nothing could be better!!

Just think of it this way...spend the money on the leather now, or get a sofa, replace it in three years, get another, replace that in three years, and then repeat that one more time. The leather should last you at least 9-10 years if not many more.

Of course the quality of the leather itself makes a difference, but if you don't have a puppy...you should be safe with any leather!!

I'm still waiting to hear a report from anyone with an ultrasuede (or similar) fabric. I gotta think it would do fairly well. One of the boats I race on has ultrasuede and it is walked on, soaked, bled on, had beers spilled on it, been slept on for days at a time when it's HOT outside and people haven't taken showers (not pleasant, but a true test of a fabric, I'd say), and honestly it still looks fantastic.

Leather probably is best in terms of durability but it really doesn't work in some interiors and some people really dislike it. I've heard microfiber actually attracts hair!

I got leather 2 months ago and love it. Slime and dirt just wipe off. Dogs aren't allowed on furniture here so claws aren't an issue
But, if they were allowed to, I don't know that it would stand up to that.

We've got an ultrasuede couch. It doesn't appear to attract hair. For me, the best thing about ultrasuede is that when Uwe walks by with floogers or 'right after the water bowl' drool, a quick swipe with a towel completely cleans it up.

To be honest, I think that the carpet is more of a fur attractor than the couch.....if that helps at all.
When this one needs to be replaced, I think we'd probably replace it with another ultrasuede (unless there is some new, better fabric out there)!

I swear by leather....good quality, soft leather, not the cheap shiny stuff! We got our set used 10 years ago and it has stood up to 5 newfs, a crazy lab mix, 5 cats, and all sorts of human animals too. ;) Our pets all hang out on the furniture, I wouldn't have it any other way! We don't usually have blankets covering it either, only if we are curled up in a blanket in the evening, otherwise the dogs are right on the leather itself. I can't imagine any other material holding up to the drool, claws, spills, and abuse we give our furniture. The set is looking old now, faded from sun, some scratches over time, which only add to it's character I think. However, Neptune totally chewed apart one of the arm cushions when he was a pup (
he's lucky he's cute!) and it looks pretty bad.

We will be replacing the set with another leather set, no question about it.

I have leather. Sadie sleeps on the couch about every night. Adam will get on the couch to lie down. Never have we had any problems with their nails. I was told by the owner of the funiture store where I bought my couch (who is also a friend of ours) that is you purchase leather to get a light color. That way if the nails scratch the leather you will not see it. If the leather is dark is has been died and then scratch marks will show

We've never had punctures either...and we have 13 dogs remember.

They all have their turn at sleeping on the furniture. We do keep something on the cushions, just because we live in a sandy area and the sand will wear out the leather.

Ours is dark...and any scratches just wipe away with leather conditioner. Of course, the leather is the heavy, thick kind...and was already "distressed" when we bought it new. Now it's just a little more distressed! ha ha ha

Really our dogs are not allowed on the funiture. We cannot keep Sadie off the couch at night and the only time Adam get on is when he is spazzing. The others never get on

we got a microfiber sectonal in the fall and I love it, however, dogs are not allowed on there. Spills wipe off as does dog slobber. In fact, spills puddle up instead of sinking in which is nice.
Madigan is the only one who will get on the couch but she only does it when we are not there to see her. So at night we close off that room so she can't be there. I would have gotten the leather but we just couldnt afford it. Maybe when this one wears out?
