Need a vacuum- for hard wood floors

Does anyone have a recommendation for a vacuum for hard wood floors (sometimes called a stick vacuum)? I searched in some old postings and found that a lot of people recommend the Dyson Animal, but I'm looking for something smaller since we don't have carpet and it will be used for just hard wood floors and a few area rugs.

I bought the Hoover Flair last week and it broke the second time I used it (literally just stopped working and won't turn back on). I can get it fixed, but I think I'd rather return it and get something else since the whole experience didn't leave me with a lot of confidence in the product.

Based on Consumer Reports, I'm considering getting the Bissell Versus. Does anyone have any experience with it or recommendations?

Thanks!

I have very little carpet...so little that a shop vac more than does what I need. For the rest, I use a 'swiffer vac'

I have hardwood floors & tile, I use the DYSON Animal for both, does a good job. Wish I had central vac.

I have hardwood and tile also, with just an area rug in my family room, and yucky carpeted stairs. The Dyson Animal does have a setting for hardwood. I use it everywhere-carpet,wood, tile, curtains, couch, walls, cabinets....

Have mostly hardwood floors on the first floor, some tile. Upstairs is more carpet than anything. Have a central vac and LOVE it!

We have mostly hardwoods, some tile and carpet and we love our Dyson Animal! We also use it to vacuum the couches, curtains and of course the bath tub too :) I love the different settings for carpet and bare floors and the long hose is great for getting all the tubleweeds of dog hair under things and in vents. We use the dry Swiffer for quick clean ups and it works well but it doesn't have as many options as the vacuum and it gets clogged up pretty quickly which requires many Swiffer pad changes. Good luck finding one that works for you!

Thanks for all the replies.
Maybe I'll try the Bissell and if I don't like it I will buy the Dyson Animal. I just don't want to spend so much...
