and I know it's not good. We noticed he was acting off the last few days but put the pieces together yesterday when he started yowling this deep, low howl. Took him into the vet right away and he is in Stage 4 Acute Kidney Failure. He was very dehydrated and his BUN was 180, Creatinine was 20! He has mouth ulcers, bad breath, weight loss...

He has been there 24 hours and still will not eat on his own. They have been flushing his blood with fluids and will be redrawing his blood at 4pm. We are just praying his levels drop by half or more. If not, this will not be good news. :(

Kadek is only 8 years old.

Does anyone have any happy ending stories that might give me hope?

OH NO! I'm so terribly sorry! I just lost my 16 year old kitty to renal failure last week. I hope your little boy pulls through!!! Sending lots of prayers for him.

I just wanted to chime in on this because it breaks my heart since I've been through it. Although currently I'm just lurking on this site learning everything I can before I become a proud Newfie owner.

My cat Dusty when he was about 2 1/2 went into complete kidney and liver failure due to a treatment of flea & tick medicine. We had found a tick and treated both of my cats, according to vet and package instructions to a T but some how it all went downhill, during that time there was a LOT of controversy around it because there was a few pet deaths around that time but I was young and didn't really know any better unfortunately.

My youngest kitten, barely 4 months old passed away while I was at work and my roommate was home with him. He noticed him acting off and within minutes he was gone.

I raced home and rushed Dusty to the emergency vet who immediately started flushing his system and treating him. They told me we were within minutes of saving his life. He barely made it but he DID make it!

It took an overnight stay at the Emergency Animal Hospital and about 5 days or so at our regular vet, flushing his system, taking tests and monitoring him but he made a FULL RECOVERY and within weeks was back to his normal self and never had a health problem again until he was much older.

My vet told me the first 24 hours are the most important, mainly if they can stay alive or not whether they are eating or drinking on their own is irrelevant. It's basically a matter of survival and getting the kidneys and other organs functioning again but since your kitty has been through the first night, I would say that's a good sign!

I hope the best for you and your kitty and just remember, there is some hope out there :)

Hugs to you and Kadek.

There is hope. One of my boys at age 6. Vet strongly suggested putting him to sleep because there was really no chance of survival. I said no, do whatever you can to save him. He is now 15 and still acting like a kitten!!!!

I'm so sorry. I've been through this with one of my cats. Unfortunately, he couldn't be saved. He was a little older than your sweet Kadek, as he was 10....his name was Seymour. You have my prayers for recovery.

I had a friend who spent several long months trying to save her 5-year-old cat from some unknown illness. It was touch and go for a number of weeks, and every Monday I expected to hear bad news...but her kitty pulled through and a year later, like nothing was ever wrong.

So YES there is hope. Cats are amazingly resilient. I hope yours is too. :hugs:

Thank you all! And a special WELCOME thank you to Erin who came out of lurkdom to help me.

Kadek's blood work last night showed some improvement. Creatinine was down to 13 (from 20) but his BUN was still 180. He is still not eating on his own. My vet (not the one that has been treating him) has given him a Guarded Prognosis.

We will be bringing him home at Noon today. I'm not sure how the next week will go but we will be trying to get him to eat, giving him Sub Q fluids and as much love as he can take. Hopefully, he will turn the corner heading in the right direction. If not, at least we'll know we did everything possible for him.

I'll keep you updated... thanks for the success stories! They are really giving me hope that he can fight this.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. :( With all the cats we have we've been lucky not to have to deal with this so far.
I really hope Kadek continues to improve and starts to eat soon. Will be sending good thoughts for him.

Kadek Update: Kadek is home and has been eating a bit of soft food! :) I have his fluids to give him (150 cc Sub Q every day) and special food. He will go in again on Monday for another blood draw to check his kidney function.

As it turns out, the ultrasound showed one very damaged kidney (possibly from birth?) and the other one was large and swollen (possible infection or lymphoma). So the next few days will tell us what he is likely to do.
