My baby has Pneumonia...and I am leaving her!

My 13 month old lil grey baby Madison has had a loud hacking non-productive cough since Monday, I thought it might be some kind of kennel cough so I called the vet last night. They told me to give her a teaspoon of Robitussin every 6 hours. We did as told as were hoping to see some improvement today; however, we saw just the opposite.

Last night she didn't sleep at all, today for the first time she refused to eat and had a 103 degree temperature. We took her out to go potty and she just collapsed! I called her breeder, who works for a vet, and she was able to get us right in to see the vet. Blood tests, EKG's and 4 x-rays later we got a diagnosis of pneumonia.

Her right lung is clear while her left lung is one big spot of pneumonia. They started IV antibiotics and some injections to calm her belly. We are home now, although she still has the IV in just in case we need to bring her back tomorrow. We have a slew of medications including Baytril and Antirobe and a few other things for her stomach.

When we brought her back to the van to go home she collapsed twice of sheer exhaustion. She is now sound asleep right next to me...however,

On Tuesday I am scheduled to have surgery on my liver and intestines, a few weeks ago they found several cancer spots on on my liver and intestines. I need to go to Boston (5 hours away) on Monday...I feel like a big jerk leaving her now while she needs me most.

Her breeder, Hilda, has offered to take her for the week (and beyond if needed) and she will make sure she gets her meds and will make sure she is progressing. But I feel like the worst mom in the world right now. I could cancel the surgery and just do it in a couple weeks or something. I know Hilda will take good care of her but at a time like this she needs her mommy! What do you think?

OMG. Your 1st priority now is to get your bod's cancer taken care of ASAP!

Never wait to eradicate cancer.

Place your beloved Madison with her breeder with instructions, and then concentrate completely on yourself.

Prayers for both of you. Never ever delay cancer treatment!

Just went through this with Max:( and as someone who had cancer detected early enough to be cancer free 35+ years later, listen to what Leska said...DON'T WAIT!
Hugs to you and your baby for quick and speedy recoveries.

Oh my goodness. You go get better and don't feel guilty about it one bit because Madison needs you and prefers you to be healthy! Sounds like she will be in good hands so don't even blink an eye. You are the BEST mom for going and taking care of yourself so that you will be able to come home and be with your girl. Sending healthy thoughts to you both.

I completely agree! You need to focus on getting yourself better and she will be in good hands with your breeder especially since she works with a vet. This way you with both be getting the best care you need right now. I hope you both have a speedy recovery from this.

Thank you all for you input and advice...In my head I know your right!

Any ideas on how I can help her in the next few days while I am with her? She is so lathargic right now and can't walk more than a few feet without losing her breathe and collapsing to the ground.

No!!! Cancer - of any kind but certainly on an organ - is not to be messed with. I'm so glad you have a great place to send her. Not only is it her breeder, but one who works with a vet! Sounds like the best newfie nana to me.

Best of luck on your surgery and recovery. Boston is a great place to have that taken care of.

Take care of yourself. Madison will be fine. She will be in fine hands, both of you healing and starting the road to recovery. You are a wonderful mommy who right now needs to put herself first! Boston is wonderful!

For the next few days love her completely, talk to her, snuggle with her, rub her tummy, keep the window open for fresh air, air out the house (amazing how much fresh oxygen helps), hand feed her warm chicken broth. And pray for her.

And bombard yourself with happy positive visualizations of both of you in perfect health, laying in the sun in a flower meadow, then walking by a brook, getting your feet wet in the cool fresh water, playing, doing a little command training, sitting under a tree together and watching the leaves blow in the breeze, hearing the birds twittering and thanking God for life and liberty and love while you and Madison enjoy each other's companionship.

Hopefully the meds kick in quickly and by this weekend, she'll be MUCH better. Then you won't have to worry. You do need to take care of yourself but I know you'll be worried about her if she's not feeling better! Keeping all fingers, toes and paws crossed that you'll be able to go in for your surgery knowing she's doing well...at Hilda's. And yes you need to keep that surgery scheduled!

Sending good thoughts and prayers for you both.

Leska has the right idea.. the best way to care for both of you is to put your trust in the pros.. your breeder and your surgeon. My thoughts are with you as you go through this tough time! (I also like Leska's vision of the future as well! Sure can't hurt!)

Hi
Your girl has her meds and now she needs to rest and repair. I'm glad you're going with the consenus on here to not wait to have your own surgery. I bet she knows you need to have this operation so having it done will make her happy while she's recovering. Please take care of yourself. I'll definitely be checking back on this thread to see how you are both doing.
all the best,
Marina

Yes, please take care of yourself and let her breeder take care of her. That way you both can get healthy and be together for a long, long time.

Oh, bad coincidence. Get your cancer taken care of .... those little bleeps can spread too fast to delay. And I am sure you're baby will be in good hands with her breeder . It'll be familiar to her and probably an adventure.

best of luck
