Our sweet rescue boy, Murphy, came to us with a-fib which meant he also came to us intact. We've seen him through a prostate problem which is currently under control. Then it was the thyroid. He is on medication for that. But the worst is the recent diagnosis of spondylosis, an excruciatingly painful back condition. We have him on a liquid form of meloxicam, as needed. Needless to say, we are watching him very closely for any sign of the onset of pain so we can get the pain med into him and keep him as comfortable and pain free as possible. He is the sweetest boy ever.

Have you any good chiropractor's or acupuncturist nearby as it can't cure but can really help.

Sorry you are going through so much but l bet Murphy loves you all the more for having a family that cares

So sorry, it is very hard watching them in pain, hopefully the meds can keep Murphy living a pain free life for some time. How old is Murphy? Where in his back? If you don't mind me asking?

Murphy was 8 years November 2013. The spondylosis is, as I understand it, in the spine near the tail area. He has already beat the odds. The vet is amazed, considering the a-fib, that he is still alive and kicking. We plan on keeping him with us as long as possible provided we can keep him pain free and happy.

I am sorry to hear that.......Poor Murphy :(

Acupuncture can really help in some cases.....My Abbey had great relieve of pain when she had it. We also used Bowen therapy...she got such great pain relieve, she used to greet the therapist really happily and back up to her as she sat in the chair

Also check out herbs as a side by side treatment as devils claw is an anti inflammatory so may be worth asking for holistic help.

Also heat pads, massage and tens sessions are really helpful with pain management

Poor baby. I can tell he's lucky to have you!

My girl Maggie actually has a similar condition in her lower spine, along with severe arthritis in her knee. We also use meloxicam, but switched to the human pill version, which works just as well, but costs $4 (Walmart) instead of $180 for a month. We also found that a large salmon oil supplement works well. (We feed a salmon based diet now instead of a supplement, but its the same idea.)

Hugs to you and your boy!

Sorry to hear about Murphy's diagnosis. My Chance had spondylosis pretty bad. It was the worst in his neck area. He got Metacam and Tramadol, along with his supplements. The Metacam was a liquid form and went by weight. Most days he could be maintained with about half his dose. When I noticed he was probably hurting more I would up the dose nearer to his weight of 120. Same with the Tramadol, but in pill form. He also got SAMe and milk thistle to help his liver with the meds. Acupuncture also helped him a lot. We did dry needles for a while and then switched to what she called aqua-puncture. Wherever he would get a needle she injected a combo of Adequan and vitamin B12. This helped also.

Moonlight has had it for a few years - at least. We found it when we did Xrays to try to figure out her UTI problem. She seems fine most of the time, but at the first sign of problems I give her Tramadol and Pepcid. BTw several vets have told me that Pepcid dissolves in a dog's stomach better than Tums.
