Metronidazole

Sasha has had terrible diarrhea for the past two days. The Vet prescribed metronidzole for a possible anaerobic bacterial infection thinking she might have eaten something in the yard. Has anyone ever had this prescribed for their Newf? In the human world I've always been told that antibotics have no effect on infections. We certainly want to stop the diarrhea but just a little concerned on giving antibotics to a 16 week old puppy. I would appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,

Ross (Berner) was on Metro quite a bit as a young pup. It always "firmed" things up for him. You can give probiotics (3 hours apart from the antibiotics) to keep the gut happy.

Metronidzole is the generic form of Flagyl given for digestive upsets in both humans and dogs. It is an antibotic. Antibotics work in infections but viruses.

I have used Metronidzole many times with my dogs. I always keep in the house and especially if we are travelling I make sure to take it with me.

Joan - brain freeze. Ofcourse antibiotics are for bacterial infections. Too much concern for Sasha and not enough thought before posting.

Thanks Becky/Joan for the info.

Lots of pups are on this antibiotic (also called Flagy) for loose stools. It's safe...I would however give probiotics as well to keep the good bacteria in the gut to prevent subsequent infections.

Laura, you can feed her boiled hamburger and rice until she is over this and back on her normal diet. She should be feeling better soon with the Metro.

My Sophie has a bit of irritable bowel trouble from time to time...she will get runny and not firm up no matter what I do. A short course of Flagyl will usually have her back on track in just a few days.
It's great for all types of intestinal bugs and other inflammatory difficulties.
Like Jeannie, I also try to keep some on hand at all times.

Metro is a fairly strong antibiotic which is used to treat giardia and some bacterial infections. It also calms the GI tract, but it shouldn't be used on a whim. It can lead to kidney and liver damage and has been shown to have neurological side effects, usually when used for several weeks to months. I hope your vet checked the stool... if your pup has coccidia, Albon is the drug of choice, not metronidazole.
