Mentor(s) in NJ/NY/PA?

Hi all! As many know I have been lurking and posting for the past year and recently on the rescue forum here. We are in the discussion stage for an 8 yr old male rescue in Canada. :allg069:Hopefully one of you will be visiting us to do our home inspection!

One of the things I said I would do is to make a post here that asks for a mentor(s) to help with any questions we might have or help/advice we might need during his life with us. I did advise that I was a member here and knew a few of you personally and that I felt we would be in good hands... but, I also said I would post here. While we have had many dogs they have not been giant breed and this is the rescue's concern. Of course, you can't get experience without adopting so this would be fantastic.

Let me know your thoughts and if I can share phone numbers, etc with you!

Thank you!!!
Melissa :goofy:

There are many NewPenDel members in the northern NJ area, and our Rescue Chair, Diane, also lives in NJ. Her contact info is on this page:
http://www.newpendelnewfclub.com/officers.htm

Please check out the NPD website events calendar
http://www.newpendelnewfclub.com/events.htm
to find events like the Rescue Reunions and Hikes..... and all are welcome to attend, even if you are not a club member.

Joining the club is a great idea for anyone - not only does participation by attendance at even a few events genuinely enhance the experience of owning and living with a Newf, you will find that by attending those few events, and even by just getting the newsletter, you will meet people who can provide valuable resources with regards to day-to-day living, vets in your area, grooming (by yourself or places to go in your area), training issues, etc.

Membership application can be found here
http://www.newpendelnewfclub.com/membership.htm
and email of Membership Chair is: Carol Zachmann
zachapr@ptd.net

Hope this helps! Good luck!

HI Melissa,
I would love to help you if needed. I'm in Pa. P.m. me and I'll give you the info you need. I don't do water or carting with the dogs, they are just therapy dogs, but will be happy to help with everyday questions. Keep up with the posts here as everyone can be such a great help!

Melissa,
So happy you are getting closer to getting owned by a newf! Of course, I am happy to help with whatever you guys need. I am relatively close to you, and drive down to your neck of the woods frequently for training classes with Boj. Please feel free to contact me with anything I can help with. One of the best things I have done is join and attend regional newf events, as Patti said, there is nothing like being around people that truly love the breed, (and don't complain about the drool!:)). There are also newfs in need of rescue through the regional clubs here as well, just in case you need more options.

Melissa,
I belong to NPD Club. I'm moving back to Pa at the end of this month. I guess I'll be seeing you at club events. Going and meeting everyone at these events are a great way to see and understand this breed. You will have a great time. Hope to meet you soon.

Melissa,

You are welcome to contact me any time w/any questions. There are many who probably have greater experience w/Newfs than I, but I have a special expertise in rescues (all of mine were adoptees) and seniors ;) Please PM me with any questions or if you prefer, please PM me for my number and we can talk on the phone.

So excited for you ...

PS. I second joining a local club. When I was down in NJ I attended some of the NPD events. It is a good and very active group. And the members are, like their newfs, all really, really nice.

That's great!!!! I look forward to meeting you (and maybe your new boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

NPD holds 7 major events per year:
2 Day NCA Draft test weekend - people, both experienced and those with ZERO experience, are always welcome at the tests and encouraged to participate as stewards, etc. even if they can come only one of the two days. Its great to help Newfs earn their titles - and everyone who shows up to steward plays a vital part in helping the Newfs earn their titles. ALSO - just because your Newf comes from rescue and just because he is 8 does not mean he can't maybe also earn a Draft Title himself if you want to try something like that.. Our "old lady" Pico earned her Rally & Draft Titles after she became a "veteran".
2 Day Water Test weekend - Stewards are always needed here also, but twice as many people (or more) usually show up just to watch, to bring a lawn chair or blanket, sit and watch and clap and cheer loudly for each dog. Each year the number of spectators grows, and we all enjoy just "hanging out" together, biting our nails as we watch the various elements of the test ("will he jump off the boat? Come on, Buddy.. please jump off the boat!" - and then a big cheer from the spectators as the dog leaps into the air and retrieves the oar!) You don't have to come both days to enjoy this one also.
Fall Fun Fest - usually CGC testing and sometimes Therapy Dog testing, always lots of Fun Games & Contests for people and their Newfs, sometimes decorative carting demonstrations, a great lunch, ALWAYS a lot of great people and enjoyment for dogs of all ages
Regional Specialty Weekend - (this occurs next weekend in Harrisburg, PA) Huge dog show - this year has 101 Newf entries! Its where we showcase our breed in the rings - both conformation and obedience.
Ramapo Supported Entry weekend - again, its a dog show - but we have a huge tailgate party afterwards this is another get-together that grows each year - I think more people come for the tailgate party now than they do for the dog show!) where everyone brings a dish and we all sit and eat and talk and laugh and visit together.... you don't have to have a dog entered to attend and join in! We welcome all members to come, take a seat, and enjoy things like Nancy Weaver's famous pasta salad.
Paws & Claws - Our MOST POPULAR event. We have had some difficulty finding a site and last year we were unable to hold the event. We are feverishly working this year to find one. The "Paws" are the Newfs - who get to play in the Water, everyone from puppies to senior citizens, show dogs and rescue dogs and everyone in between (I am very proud of our "Guppy" titles earned at past Paws & Claws). The "Claws" are the lobster tails we eat at dinner. Its a totally Fun Day from start to finish.
Annual Spring Luncheon - our only "non-dog" event, but one of our MOST IMPORTANT events, and its one I try to encourage every member to attend. Its where we gather as a community in beautiful surroundings, talk for a few hours over gourmet food, cheer for our members & Newfs who earned titles during the previous year, applaud the Living Legends, meet new people (maybe the person sitting at the next table will be someone to train with next year, or someone at your table is someone you stewarded for at a Draft Test and helped their dog get his title, or vice versa!). It is NOT just an event for the people getting awards...that is just one part of the day.

There are also numerous smaller events throughout the year - people bring their dogs to Education events where the public gets to Meet The Breed, we have two areas of Water Training Sessions this year (both are in PA, but we hope to someday have two more groups training - one in northern NJ and another in southern NJ), DNA cinics to gather blood samples for research, and our Rescue Reunions and Hikes, held multiple times throughout the year.

I tell new people to try to attend each event at least once just so you can see what they are all about. (except the Spring Luncheon which I tell everyone to attend every year!!!)

The Newfs are the "glue" that holds us all together - our love for these dogs is the common bond that helps us to form a community. But its really also about the PEOPLE. Sadly, the dogs come and someday they go. The puppies we will cheer for next weekend will someday be the Living Legends, and then someday they will be gone from us and we'll be hugging eah other and wiping tears away and sharing fond memories. The PEOPLE are there for decades. Friendships made in the club have lasted 20 or 30+ years. We laugh together, we admire each other's dogs, we cheer for them, and some days we cry for them.

Being a part of Newf-Net or Newf-l or any other cyber-group is fantastic. But attending just a few events and getting to meet the "faces" that go along with the names, both human and Newf, really enhances things.... we really get to share the journey of our dog's lives together...

So I encourage everyone to join their regional club, no matter where they live!

I was just washing the dishes and thinking about what I wrote previously...... and thinking about the PEOPLE and the Luncheon, and what I wrote about sharing the journey of our dog's lives together...
and thinking about some of the people on NN and also about the two dogs we just lost, Emma & Sophie.... and how so many of us are "connected".

Example: I met Barry & Linda Jones at a Ramapo NPD Supported Entry a few years ago.. Saw they had a Newf and just walked over and said HI!!! Fast forward to: This year they were at the Draft Test with their boy Max. Earned their DD! Michelle & I were also there with Emma. Carla was there with Emma's mom Pico. The girls both got DD's also, and Emma became a VN. Mike McKeon, Sophie's Dad, was the Draft Steward for Pico's freight haul. Mike also owns Harry, Dante's brother, and Dante is Pico's father. Mike was also the first person to take Dante into the "ring" at a NPD Fun fest 10+ years ago. We cheered for Emma & Max & Pico and all of the others at the luncheon... and the cheers were "extra special" because we all had a small part in their "journey".. and we cried with Mike for Sophie... because this was a part of the "jouney" also.

Today Dante is gone.... and sadly now so is Emma & Sophie. But Max is still here, and so is Pico & Harry, and so are many other dogs. And there will be new ones in the future to cheer for and cry over. But the PEOPLE we have met along they way, people we are all forever "connected to", that is truly a blessing.
Barry, Linda, Carla, Michelle, Mike & I are all "connected" by the journeys of each of those dogs.

***I can tell the same story about so many other people who were there that day (and many are here on NN!). - just used those as an example.

I guess what I am trying to say is: I LOVE the dogs.... but I also love what they have brought me - the chance to meet and know a lot of wonderful people along the way. So many of you are an integral part of the memories of my own dogs' lives, and for this I am truly grateful.

I just thought some more..... VBG..... and the connections mentioned above go even further.... like ripples on a lake.

Barry & Linda donated a gift basket to the Luncheon.... which was won by the McGuires. We cried last year with the McGuires as they accepted their Living Legend award for Gunnar, who had recently passed away. This year the McGuire's donated the trophy for BOS at the Regional in memory of Gunnar... and that award will be won next weekend by some other Newf and owner... which now connects them to Gunnar and the McGuires. Barry & Linda sponsored trophies also for all 4 the placements in the AmBred Dog class.... so they will also now be "connected" to the dogs and owners who win those trophies.

Another: New NPD members Dan & Deb Jacobs came to their first event - the Annual Spring Luncheon. They won the 50/50, which they turned around and used to buy a Dannyquest statue to support the Newf Health Challenge... which someday might fund a research study to make ALL of our dogs healthier in the future! They've also sponsored a trophy, which will "connect" them to the winner of BOB at the Regional. They'll also be competing with their new pup Annie at the Regional..... and maybe take home a trophy donated by someone else, perhaps in memory of some other dog! Yet another new connection.
We had an Obedience discussion as part of the presentation at the Annual Spring Luncheon, and in the program was a listing of places to train in our region. Deb & Dan own a training facility. Two tables over, someone read their names and saw it was close to them, so now they've signed up with their new puppy to train with Deb and maybe have some fun together. Maybe next year or the year after, we'll be helping steward as they each attempt a test, or cheering as they get their first awards.

It goes on and on...... threads weaving in and out of each others lives, and the lives of our dogs.....

So things like donating/sponsoring a trophy, or donating an item for a door prize or Brown Bag auction..... even the dues you pay as a member which provide the newsletter or helps cover expenses at events....... ALL of those things make a positive and necessary contribution to the community as a whole, and help to establish the connections that link us all together.:icon_knuddel:

Hi Patti,
I'm crying reading all of your postings. This is exactly the type of organization and friendship that we want to be a part of. The rescue that Kim.B has been working with us on, was due to be moved on May 7. When Kim told me that, I knew it was meant to be! May 7 is my birthday, so more ripples.

Our first Newfie expedition was to Nessa's home in Red Bank, where we met Linda & Barry, Meg, Nessa and others; Red Bank was my grandparent's hometown. Slightly different ripples but ripples nonetheless. We are all connected in some way and it is fantastic that we can discover these together!

Heartache and celebrations are part of the friendships that are formed and as you say, will last for years - after all, we are all family!

Thank you and bless you!

Hi Patti, Actually based on the description of his personality, and obviously it is too soon to know, I was thinking therapy Newf...

Therapy Newf is wonderful!!!
Many of my friends do Therapy work, also they have fun doing school & library reading programs.
Only mentioned the other because sometimes people don't realize just how many doors are really open to them. Not ever "path" is right for every dog, nor for every person. They all aren't show dogs, nor water dogs, nor obedience dogs... what is fun for one dog may not be fun for another... and the same for the owners!

Look forward to meeting you!

*update*

Hi Mentors and friends!
Wanted to give you an update on the adoption status. After discussing with Kim.B we are going to adopt, Theo, 8 year old male,(162lbs) who is from the Montreal area! Mentor Donna came over to our house a week or so ago to inspect everything to make sure we were real - the bathrooms are finished Donna! come back again - and we were approved shortly after.

We are picking up Theo on Saturday!! Driving up to Keeseville, NY to meet the very kind rescue people that are driving him down from Montreal! We are going to rent an SUV for the trip as a MINI is not going to be comfortable for such a long trip for Theo.

Any suggestions on what to bring in the car with us for his comfort and entertainment? How often do you think we should stop on the way home. (It will be about a 5 hour trip each way.) Thanks for all info. I'm attaching a picture of him as well!! WE ARE SO EXCITED!:kgo_027: Sorry the picture is too big to upload. I'll have to figure that out!
